ABSTRACT A two-phase thermodynamic power system includes a capillary device, vapor accumulator, superheater, an inline turbine, a condenser, a liquid pump and a liquid preheater for generating output power as a generator. The capillary device, such as a loop heat pipe or a capillary pumped loop, is coupled to a vapor accumulator, superheater, the inline turbine for generating output power for power generation, liquid pump and liquid preheater. The capillary device receives input heat that is used to change phase of liquid received from the liquid preheater, liquid pump and condenser into vapor for extra heating in the superheater used to then drive the turbine. The power system is well suited for space applications using a radioisotope, active nuclear or solar heat source. The system can use waste heat from various dynamic or static power systems as a heat source and waste heat from spacecraft components such as electronics as a heat source. These heat sources can be used separately or in any combination. The power system can be combined with thermal energy storage devices when operated with heat sources that are not steady state. Heat sources are useful for driving the capillary wick, superheater and liquid preheater for increased power efficiency and long lifetime operation. The power system is well suited for space receiving heat from a heat source to produce useful mechanical energy. A superheater in combination with a liquid pump and preheater are implemented for use with the evaporator for improved thermal efficiency while operating at maximum cycle temperatures well below other available power conversion cycles.

ABSTRACT In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, an alloy or other composite material is provided formed of a bulk metallic glass matrix with a microstructure of crystalline metal particles. The alloy preferably has a composition of (XaNibCuc)100−d−cYdAlc, wherein the sum of a, b and c equals 100, wherein 40≦a≦80, 0≦b≦35, 0≦c≦40, 4≦d≦30, and 0≦e≦20, and wherein preferably X is composed of an early transition metal and preferably Y is composed of a refractory body-centered cubic early transition metal. A preferred embodiment of the invention also provides a method of producing an alloy composed of two or more phases at ambient temperature. The method includes the steps of providing a metastable crystalline phase composed of at least two elements, heating the metastable crystalline phase together with at least one additional element to form a liquid, casting the liquid, and cooling the liquid to form the alloy. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the composition and cooling rate of the liquid can be controlled to determine the volume fraction of the crystalline phase and determine the size of the crystalline particles, respectively.

ABSTRACT A configuration and treatment for degrading porous material, e.g., concrete, brick, or other masonry material, via rapid, efficient electro-osmosis. One application carries dehydration to an extent that it weakens a structure for demolition by significantly dehydrating its structural material. A durable, dimensionally stable anode is affixed to the structure and attached to a wire from a DC power supply. The anode is composed of a valve metal substrate with a semiconductive coating of a precious metal, cement or ceramic. Connection to a cathode through the power supply completes the circuit. A DC voltage is applied to the concrete structure by cycling a pro-specified pulse train from the power supply. One pulse train consists of an initial positive pulse followed by a shorter duration negative pulse and ends with a short off period before the pulse train is reinitiated. The cycle continues until the porous material has been determined to be sufficiently degraded.

ABSTRACT A purification apparatus, kit and method for purifying DNA, RNA, proteins, antigens, antibodies and cells. The apparatus has a wand and a reservoir tube. The wand is made of a cap, a sample collection assembly and an elongated shaft connecting the cap to the sample collection assembly. The sample collection assembly has a series of microstructures on its surface, or microparticles enclosed within it for increasing the surface area of the sample collection assembly. The increased surface area permits maximum exposure to and binding of target molecules thereto. The reservoir tube associated with the wand has one end defining an opening and a second end that is closed and preferably cone or cylindrical shaped. The cap of the wand securely and sealingly fastens to the open end of the reservoir tube with the shaft and the sample collection assembly fitting easily inside the reservoir tube. The apparatus, kit and methods can be used for protein and nucleic acids detection by calorimetric, luminescent, fluorescent or electrochemical means through attachments for detecting such signals. The apparatus, kit and methods can also be used in conjunction with an attachment for thermal regulation to perform nucleic acids amplification. The apparatus, kit and methods can further be configured for integrated, high throughput purification and detection of proteins and nucleic acids.

ABSTRACT A broadband loaded antenna and matching network with related methods for design optimization are disclosed. The loaded antenna structures may preferably be either monopole or dipole antennas, but the particular methods and techniques presented herein may be applied to additional antenna configurations. The load circuits positioned along an antenna may comprise parallel inductor-resistor configurations or other combinations of passive circuit elements. A matching network for connecting an antenna to a transmission line or other medium preferably includes at least a transmission line transformer and a parallel inductor. Various optimization techniques are presented to optimize the design of such broadband monopole antennas. These techniques include implementation of simple genetic algorithms (GAs) or micro-GAs. Component modeling for selected components may be effected through either lumped element representation or curved wire representation. Measured results are presented to ensure that certain design criteria are met, including low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) and high gain over a desired frequency band.

ABSTRACT A flexible global distributed switch adapted for wide geographical coverage with an end-to-end capacity that scales to several Petabits per second (Pb/s), while providing grade-of-service and quality-of-service control, is constructed from packet-switching edge modules and channel-switching core modules. The global distributed switch may be used to form a global Internet. The global distributed switch enables simple controls, resulting in scalability and performance advantages due to a significant reduction in the mean number of hops in a path between two edge modules. Traffic is sorted at each ingress edge module according to egress edge module. At least one packet queue is dedicated to each egress edge module. Harmonious reconfiguration of edge modules and core modules is realized by time counter co-ordination. The global distributed switch can be enlarged from an initial capacity of a few Terabits per second to a capacity of several Petabits per second, and from regional to global coverage. It can accommodate connections to legacy systems, such as IP-based networks, and provide connections over one or two hops among distant legacy devices, such as routers.

ABSTRACT In an embodiment, neural activity of a subject may be measured with an implant in the sensory motor cortex of the subject and used to predict an intended movement. The measured neural activity may be the local field potential (LFP) at an electrode or single unit (SU) activity. The spectral structure of the LFP and the SU activity may be estimated using spectral analysis techniques. To facilitate the inventive methods, the present invention provides pharmaceutical compositions including sources of PEDF.

ABSTRACT Transmembrane B ephrins and their Eph receptors signal hi-directionally. The presently claimed invention describes a cytoplasmic protein, designated PDZ-RGS3, which binds B ephrins through a PDZ domain, and has a regulator of heterotrimeric G protein signaling (RGS) domain. PDZ-RGS3 mediates signaling from the ephrin-B cytoplasmic tail. SDF-1, a chemokine with a G protein coupled receptor, or BDNF, act as chemoattractants for cerebellar granule cells, with SDF-1 action being selectively inhibited by soluble EphB receptor. The claimed invention reveals a pathway that links reverse signaling to cellular guidance, uncovers a novel mode of control for G proteins, and demonstrates a mechanism for selective regulation of responsiveness to neuronal guidance cues. Further, compositions and methods of use are provided for modulating cell migration as a function of chemokines and GPCR interaction, to aid in the treatment of disease states and medical conditions, including cancer and immune responses such as allergy and autoimmune responses. In one embodiment, a method of altering the sensitivity of a cell to a chemokine is provided using a PDZ-RGS3 protein.

By varying the pixel subsets, e.g., by jittering, and/or altering the processing criteria, the perceived visual acuity may be further improved. Alternatively and additionally, such processing may be further extended to drive neighboring electrodes in combination to thus stimulate virtual electrode sites and thus further enhance visual acuity.

The samples must additionally be stably aligned to within a few microns at a point in space. The ability to accurately perform these tasks remotely and automatically leads to a significant increase in sample throughput and reliability for high-volume protein characterization efforts. Since the protein samples are placed in a shipping-compatible layered stack of sample cassettes each holding many samples, a large number of samples can be shipped in a single cryogenic shipping container.

Filler materials may be added to increase the porosity or tailor the catalytic properties of the cermet material. Additionally, the cermet material may be reinforced with fibers or screens. The porous filter may also be electrically conductive so that a current may be passed therethrough to heat the filter during use. Further, a heating element may be incorporated into the porous cermet filter during manufacture. This heating element can be coated with a ceramic material to electrically insulate the heating element. An external heating element may also be provided to heat the cermet filter during use.

The method includes the steps of providing a metastable crystalline phase composed of at least two elements, heating the metastable crystalline phase together with at least one additional element to form a liquid, casting the liquid, and cooling the liquid to form the alloy. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the composition and cooling rate of the liquid can be controlled to determine the volume fraction of the crystalline phase and determine the size of the crystalline particles, respectively.

Detail data is formed for vertices of polygons near the trim curve, representing information about the object surface not present in the trimmed mesh representation. The detail data is applied to the vertices, thereby refining their locations. Any polygons near the trim curve which are outside a prescribed tolerance of the object surface are subdivided. The steps of forming and applying the detail data followed by the step of subdividing are iteratively performed until the trimmed mesh representation is within a prescribed tolerance of the object surface.

The aluminum alloy contains a simultaneous dispersion of three types of Al3X compound particles (X=Ti, V, Zr) having a L12 crystal structure, and their lattice parameters are coherent to the aluminum matrix lattice. A process for producing this cast article is also disclosed, as well as a metal matrix composite, which includes the aluminum alloy serving as a matrix containing up to about 60% by volume of a secondary filler material.

The mounting frame perimetrically surrounds the peizo-diaphragm and enables attachment of the piezo-diaphragm to a housing.

ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for forecasting the likely occurrence of convective weather events, such as thunderstorms. An image filter is used to identify areas of interest within a meteorological image that are likely to contain convective weather. The image filter and an image difference processor identify areas within the meteorological image that are likely to experience a growth and/or decay of weather events. The meteorological image, interest image and growth/decay image are processed to produce the short-term forecast.

THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE

Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.

This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, July 19, 2005.

The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.

HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?

Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?

THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:

FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
     National Institutes of Health (NIH)
         National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

Department of Defense (DOD)
     Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
         Army Research Office (ARO)

We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.

APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.

Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:

APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC

APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)

INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.

ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.

FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.

APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.

ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:

CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.

The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.

The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.

The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.

As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
