ABSTRACT | The present invention provides a novel method for diagnosing squamous cell carcinoma or prostate cancer in a tissue sample. The method does not involve visual examination of morphology. The method comprises providing a sample from the subject and assaying for the presence, or absence or reduced level of expression of a novel gene, hereinafter referred to as the “DESC1 gene”. The method comprises isolating RNA, preferably mRNA from tissue samples, and detecting the mRNA which encodes all or part of DESC1 protein. Preferably the detection comprises amplifying the mRNA, preferably by reverse transcriptase-PCR using primers specific to a region in the DESC1 gene; and detecting the presence or absence of the amplified product to determine whether DESC1 mRNA is present or absent in the tissue sample. Alternatively the detection comprises separating the RNA which encodes all or part of DESC1 protein from the total RNA, preferably by separating on an agarose gel, and detecting the mRNA encoding DESC1, preferably by using a probe specific for such mRNA. Optionally, the DESC1 mRNA when present, is also quantified using conventional techniques. The present invention also relates to polynucleotides which encode the DESC1 protein, to the DESC1 protein, and to antibodies to the DESC1 protein. The present invention also relates to hybridization probes, and to primers useful in the method of detecting DESC1 mRNA. |

ABSTRACT | Positional cloning has been carried out to identify the gene responsible for the hypochromic anemia of the zebrafish mutant weissherbst. The gene, ferroportin1, encodes a novel multiple-transmembrane domain protein, expressed in the yolk sac. Zebrafish ferroportin1 is required for the transport of iron from maternally-derived yolk stores to the circulation, and functions as an iron exporter when expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Human and mouse homologs of the ferroportin1 gene have been identified. The invention includes isolated polynucleotides, vectors and host cells comprising nucleotide sequences encoding Ferroportin1 proteins and variants thereof, including those having iron transport function. The invention also includes polypeptides encoded by ferroportin1 genes and variants of such polypeptides, and fusion polypeptides comprising a Ferroportin1 or a portion thereof. Methods to produce a Ferroportin1, methods to produce antibodies to a Ferroportin1 and methods to identify agents binding to a Ferroportin1, which can be inhibitors or enhancers of Ferroportin1 iron transport activity, are also described. Inhibitors of Ferroportin1 activity can be used in a therapy for hemochromatosis. |

ABSTRACT | Compounds modulating CD59 mediated complement activity, compositions including these compounds, and methods of making and using the compounds are disclosed, which are based on the identification of the hu CD59 amino acid residues which serve as the binding site for CD59-C9 interactions. These residues correspond to amino acid residues 42–58, and bind to the region of C9 corresponding to human 334–418, more specifically, between amino acid residues 359 and 384. Compounds can be derived using this basic amino acid sequence and corresponding three dimensional structure within the protein using any of several techniques known to those skilled in the art, including rational drug design using computer data bases and modeling of peptide/protein-ligand binding, antibodies and anti-idiotypic antibodies generated to the proteins or peptides containing this peptide sequence, and modified peptides. Those compounds imitating the structure and/or function of the peptide region are referred to herein as “peptidomimetics”, and include small molecules which present the surface exposed side chains in these amino acids in the same relative positions, compounds identified by combinatorial chemistry techniques which bind to the active portions of human C9, as well as modified peptides. The compounds can be used to inhibit complement by binding to C9 analogously to CD59, or to maintain complement inhibition, by blocking CD59 binding to C9. The compounds can be administered locally or systemically in any suitable carrier in an amount effective to either inhibit complement or block the inhibition of complement, in a patient in need of treatment thereof. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides a fast and efficient method for determining the three-dimensional conformation of a protein. The steps of the method of the invention include: 1) formation of physical distance constraints, e.g., forming intramolecular chemical crosslinks of known size between residues of a protein; 2) enriching the number of the molecules that have intramolecular chemical crosslinks in the reaction pool, e.g., using size separation to remove proteins with intermolecular bonds; 3) exposing the enriched reaction pool to a protease that cuts the protein at specific sites to produce peptide fragments; 4) measuring the size of the peptide fragments to determine linkage sites with a certain spatial relationship in the protein; and 5)interpreting the data produced to determine spatial geometry and protein structure based on the deduced spatial relationship of the linkage sites. The information is preferably analyzed with aid from a computer system, which can be used to generate and/or analyze distance constraints between amino acids. |

ABSTRACT | A collapsible discone antenna is provided with an ultra wide band width by providing a collapsible conical skeleton cone, with the rods of the skeleton being provided with meander lines so as to effectively reduce the overall dimensions of the antenna by a factor of 2, with the antenna rods being electrically interconnected at their distal ends so as to eliminate performance degradation due to varying ground conductivities. A specialized feed configuration is used in one embodiment to feed multiple antennas stacked above a low band disc through the utilization of one or more coaxial lines which are wrapped around a ferrite toroid so that they may be passed up through the low-band disc without detuning the low band discone antenna. The use of the toroid inductor between the low-band cone and the low-band disc further reduces the low frequency cutoff of the antenna by markedly decreasing the VSWR at frequencies as low as 20 megahertz. |

ABSTRACT | An adaptive signal processing system utilizes a Multistage Weiner Filter having an analysis section and a synthesis section that includes a processor. The processor includes an algorithm for generating a data adaptive linear transformation, computing an adaptive weighting wmed of the data, and applying the computed adaptive weighting wmed to a function of a main input signal and an auxiliary input signal to generate an output signal. A plurality of building blocks in a Gram-Schmidt cascaded canceller-type configuration sequentially decorrelate input signals from each other to produce a single filtered output signal. Each building block generates an adaptive weight wmed that is applied to generate a local output signal. The effect of non-Gaussian noise contamination on the convergence MOE of the system is negligible. In addition, when desired signal components are included in weight training data they cause little loss of noise cancellation. |

ABSTRACT | An approximate message authentication code (AMAC) which, like conventional message authentication codes, provides absolute authentication of the origin of the message, yet provides an approximate integrity check for the content of the message. The approximate integrity check will be computed probabilistically and will likely be the same for messages having only a small percentage of different bits. A distance measure on the AMACs, such as a Hamming distance measure, may be used to determine whether the number of bit differences between the messages is likely to be within an acceptable amount. The AMAC is a probabilistic checksum based on a shared key. The AMAC uses the message and a shared key as inputs. Optionally, an initial value may also be used as an input. In one version of the invention, the data in the message M are permuted and arranged (physically or logically) into a table having |A| bits in each column and T2 rows, where T is may be an odd integer. The permuted data are masked, for example, to generate an unbiased, independent, identically distributed set of bits (1s and 0s). Taking T rows at a time, the majority bit value for each column is determined and that majority value is used to generate a new row. This procedure is repeated on the T new rows of majority bits. The resulting |A| bits is the AMAC. |

ABSTRACT | Decontamination of nuclear facilities is necessary to reduce the radiation field during normal operations and decommissioning of complex equipment. In this invention, we discuss gel and foam based diphosphonic acid (HEDPA) chemical solutions that are unique in that these solutions can be applied at room temperature; provide protection to the base metal for continued applications of the equipment; and reduce the final waste form production to one step. The HEDPA gels and foams are formulated with benign chemicals, including various solvents, such as ionic liquids and reducing and complexing agents such as hydroxamic acids, and formaldehyde sulfoxylate. Gel and foam based HEDPA processes allow for decontamination of difficult to reach surfaces that are unmanageable with traditional aqueous process methods. Also, the gel and foam components are optimized to maximize the dissolution rate and assist in the chemical transformation of the gel and foam to a stable waste form. |

ABSTRACT | This invention relates to the field of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) direct energy conversion. In particular, TPV systems use filters to minimize parasitic absorption of below bandgap energy. This invention constitutes a novel combination of front surface filters to increase TPV conversion efficiency by reflecting useless below bandgap energy while transmitting a very high percentage of the useful above bandgap energy. In particular, a frequency selective surface is used in combination with an interference filter. The frequency selective surface provides high transmission of above bandgap energy and high reflection of long wavelength below bandgap energy. The interference filter maintains high transmission of above bandgap energy and provides high reflection of short wavelength below bandgap energy and a sharp transition from high transmission to high reflection. |

ABSTRACT | A computer implemented method modifies an experimental electron density map. A set of selected known experimental and model electron density maps is provided and standard templates of electron density are created from the selected experimental and model electron density maps by clustering and averaging values of electron density in a spherical region about each point in a grid that defines each selected known experimental and model electron density maps. Histograms are also created from the selected experimental and model electron density maps that relate the value of electron density at the center of each of the spherical regions to a correlation coefficient of a density surrounding each corresponding grid point in each one of the standard templates. The standard templates and the histograms are applied to grid points on the experimental electron density map to form new estimates of electron density at each grid point in the experimental electron density map. |

ABSTRACT | A method of obtaining an arbitrary, admissible transverse magnetization profile as the summed response of two, self refocused selective “half pulse” excitations for use in, e.g., magnetic resonance imaging pulse generation. The problem of finding the pair of half pulses is rephrased in the inverse scattering formalism and a simple closed form algorithm for the solution is given, provided the target transverse profile has constant phase (modulo 180°). The problem has a unique low energy solution for sufficiently small, complex valued data, and an algorithm for finding the solution is provided. This solution is used to generate pairs of half pulses for given target transverse profiles. |

How To Use This Page
THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.
This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, January 23, 2007.
The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
VIEW PATENT
As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
