ABSTRACT | The Variable-Force Payload Ejecting System, residing within an air vehicle, utilizes multiple pressure generators, one or more of which may be activated, to produce variable levels of force. A controlling computer within the air vehicle determines when and how much pressure needs to be generated to eject a given item, such as a submunition, from the vehicle. In its determination, the computer factors in the vehicle's forward velocity and height over the intended target at the time of ejection and the characteristics of the particular submunition to be ejected. An activating mechanism activates one or more pressure generators to produce the determined amount of pressure. The pressure thusly generated acts on an inflatable tube that inflates and expels the selected submunition. The result is a more precise delivery of the submunitions onto the intended targets. |

ABSTRACT | Methods of fabricating comb drive devices utilizing one or more sacrificial etch-buffers are disclosed. An illustrative fabrication method may include the steps of etching a pattern onto a wafer substrate defining one or more comb drive elements and sacrificial etch-buffers, liberating and removing one or more sacrificial etch-buffers prior to wafer bonding, bonding the etched wafer substrate to an underlying support substrate, and etching away the wafer substrate. In some embodiments, the sacrificial etch-buffers are removed after bonding the wafer to the support substrate. The sacrificial etch-buffers can be provided at one or more selective regions to provide greater uniformity in etch rate during etching. A comb drive device in accordance with an illustrative embodiment can include a number of interdigitated comb fingers each having a more uniform profile along their length and/or at their ends, producing less harmonic distortion during operation. |

ABSTRACT | An alternative HER-2/neu product, herstatin, consists of subdomains I and II from the ectodomain of p185HER-2 and a unique 79 amino acid C-terminus encoded by intron 8. Recombinant herstatin added to cells was found to bind to and inhibit p185HER-2. The effects of ectopic expression of herstatin in combination with either p185HER-2 or with its homolog, the EGF receptor, in several cell lines was studied. Cotransfection of herstatin with HER-2 inhibited p185HER-2 levels and caused an approximate 8 fold reduction in p185 tyrosine phosphorylation. Inhibition of p185HER-2 tyrosine phosphorylation corresponded to a dramatic decline in colony formation by cells that coexpressed p185HER-2 and herstatin. Herstatin also interfered with EGF activation of the EGF receptor in cotransfected cells demonstrated by impaired receptor tyrosine phosphorylation, reduced receptor down-regulation, and growth suppression. For both p185HER-2 and the EGF receptor, the extent of inhibition was affected by the expression levels of herstatin relative to the receptor. Herstatin is an autoinhibitor of p185HER-2 and expands its inhibitory activity to another member of the group I family of receptor tyrosine kinases, the EGF receptor. |

The substrate of the restrained surface wave resonators features multiple subsurface horizontal indentations in one major substrate surface deposited on a stiffening layer to provide improved structural rigidity against flexure caused by normal acceleration based upon the diminished mass and reduced weight resulting from removal of portions of the substrate subsurface through micro-machining, and it also tends to improve excessive sensitivity to other flexural deformations. The present invention encompasses a restrained surface wave resonator device and a restrained surface wave resonator system. |

ABSTRACT | Methods and systems for syntactically indexing and searching data sets to achieve more accurate search results and for indexing and searching data sets using entity tags alone or in combination therewith are provided. Example embodiments provide a Syntactic Query Engine (“SQE”) that parses, indexes, and stores a data set, as well as processes natural language queries subsequently submitted against the data set. The SQE comprises a Query Preprocessor, a Data Set Preprocessor, a Query Builder, a Data Set Indexer, an Enhanced Natural Language Parser (“ENLP”), a data set repository, and, in some embodiments, a user interface. After preprocessing the data set, the SQE parses the data set according to a variety of levels of parsing and determines as appropriate the entity tags and syntactic and grammatical roles of each term to generate enhanced data representations for each object in the data set. The SQE indexes and stores these enhanced data representations in the data set repository. Upon subsequently receiving a query, the SQE parses the query also using a variety of parsing levels and searches the indexed stored data set to locate data that contains similar terms used in similar grammatical roles and/or with similar entity tag types as indicated by the query. In this manner, the SQE is able to achieve more contextually accurate search results more frequently than using traditional search engines. |

Included are methods for making patches according to the invention and for tissue engineering using patches of the invention. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention relates to rapid, quantitative, specific, high through-put methods for screening test substances for their ability to inhibit activity of an ouabain-resistant Na+—K+-ATPase involved in a variety of biological processes such as regulation of osmotic balance and cell volume, maintenance of the resting membrane potential, establishment of the ionic composition of cerebrospinal fluid and aqueous humor, electrical activity of muscle and nerve, and receptor-mediated endocytosis, cardiac muscle contractility, neurotransmitter metabolism and vascular muscle cell contraction. These methods can be employed to identify compounds for use in therapeutic applications for disease processes in which dysfunction of the Na+—K+-ATPase contributes to a pathological process. The present invention also includes kits which are used in the methods provided herein. The present invention further includes methods of treating or preventing diseases or disorders which are associated with dysfunction of the Na+—K+—ATPase. |

Isolated mammalian Eme1 and Eme2 proteins derived from humans and murine species and isolated nucleic acids encoding the proteins are also described. |

ABSTRACT | We have now discovered that eukaryotes, including mammals, have a DNA mismatch repair pathway analogous to the pathway that exists in bacteria. Defects or alterations in this mismatch repair pathway in a mammal, such as a human, will result in the accumulation of unstable repeated DNA sequences. Such a phenotype has a high correlation to disease state in a number of cancers, such as hereditary colon cancers. Accordingly, discovering a defect or alteration in the pathway can be diagnostic of a predisposition to cancer, and prognostic for a particular cancer. We have also discovered and sequenced one of the genes in this pathway in a number of mammals, including humans. This gene, referred to herein as MSH2, has many applications. It can be used in assays, to express gene product, for drug screens, and therapeutically. We also disclose herein a method for screening for other genes in this mismatch repair pathway. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention relates to a method of isolating stem cells from a mixed population of different cell types. This method involves selecting a promoter which functions only in said stem cells and not in the other cell types. The promoter can have a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 4, SEQ ID NO: 5, SEQ ID NO: 6, SEQ ID NO: 7, and SEQ ID NO: 8. A nucleic acid molecule encoding a marker protein under control of said promoter is introduced into all cell types of said mixed population and only the stem cells, but not the other cell types, within said mixed population are allowed to express said marker protein. The cells of said mixed population of cell types that are expressing the marker protein, which are restricted to the stem cells are identified and separated from the mixed population, where the separated cells are restricted to the stem cells. The promoter, nucleic acid constructs comprising it, and the resulting stem cells are also disclosed. The nucleic constructs can be incorporated in transgenic animals in order to monitor stem cell movement. A disorder mediated by stem cell proliferation can be carried out by administering both (1) a nucleic acid construct comprising the promoter of the present application and an enzyme capable of converting a prodrug to a cytotoxic drug and (2) the prodrug. |

In addition, methods of conducting suites of RD triple resonance NMR experiments for high-throughput resonance assignment of proteins and determination of secondary structure elements are disclosed. |

In some preferred embodiments, the peptide is the binding domain nearest to the membrane proximal ectodomain. Corresponding domains are identifiable in a variety of B.t. toxin receptors. |

Example embodiments provide a Syntactic Query Engine (“SQE”) that parses, indexes, and stores a data set, as well as processes natural language queries subsequently submitted against the data set. The SQE comprises a Query Preprocessor, a Data Set Preprocessor, a Query Builder, a Data Set Indexer, an Enhanced Natural Language Parser (“ENLP”), a data set repository, and, in some embodiments, a user interface. After preprocessing the data set, the SQE parses the data set according to a variety of levels of parsing and determines as appropriate the entity tags and syntactic and grammatical roles of each term to generate enhanced data representations for each object in the data set. The SQE indexes and stores these enhanced data representations in the data set repository. Upon subsequently receiving a query, the SQE parses the query also using a variety of parsing levels and searches the indexed stored data set to locate data that contains similar terms used in similar grammatical roles and/or with similar entity tag types as indicated by the query. In this manner, the SQE is able to achieve more contextually accurate search results more frequently than using traditional search engines. |

An interrogation device delivers ultrasound through the solid and a captures a reflection spectrum from the diffraction grating. The reflection spectrum exhibits peaks whose relative size depends on the properties of the various phases of the multiphase fluid. For example, for particles in a liquid, the peaks exhibit dependence on the particle size and the particle volume fraction. Where the exact relationship is know know a priori, data from different peaks of the same reflection spectrum or data from the peaks of different spectra obtained from different diffraction gratings can be used to resolve the size and volume fraction. |

During identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the cad gene, a two-base pair adenosine insertion located in exon five and unique to clone 7-56 was discovered. The sequence mutation causes a frame-shift predicted to result in premature termination of the protein. For routine detection of the mutation, a diagnostic assay was developed utilising Template-directed Dye-terminator Incorporation and Fluorescence Polarization detection (FP-TDI). |

However, multiple electrical feed-through metal traces are provided by fabricating via holes through the capping plate for electrical connection from the outside of the package through the via-holes to the inside of the package. Each metal seal ring serves the dual purposes of hermetic sealing and providing the electrical feed-through metal trace. |

Also, non-invasive methods for determining the brain or blood level of an analyte of interest, such as glucose, drugs, alcohol, poisons, and the like, comprises: generating an excitation laser beam at a selected wavelength (e.g., at a wavelength of about 400 to 900 nanometers); focusing the excitation laser beam into the anterior chamber of an eye of the subject so that aqueous humor, vitreous humor, or one or more conjunctiva vessels in the eye is illuminated; detecting (preferably confocally detecting) a Raman spectrum from the illuminated portion of the eye; and then determining the blood level or brain level (intracranial or cerebral spinal fluid level) of an analyte of interest for the subject from the Raman spectrum. In certain embodiments, the detecting step may be followed by the step of subtracting a confounding fluorescence spectrum from the Raman spectrum to produce a difference spectrum; and determining the blood level and/or brain level of the analyte of interest for the subject from that difference spectrum, preferably using linear or nonlinear multivariate analysis such as partial least squares analysis. Apparatus for carrying out the foregoing methods are also disclosed. |

ABSTRACT | Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is the most important commercial tree species in the USA harvested for pulp and solid wood products. Increasing the efficiency of chemical pulping may be achieved through the manipulation of genes involved in the lignin biosynthetic pathway. A null allele of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) has been discovered in the loblolly pine clone 7-56 which displays altered lignin composition. During identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the cad gene, a two-base pair adenosine insertion located in exon five and unique to clone 7-56 was discovered. The sequence mutation causes a frame-shift predicted to result in premature termination of the protein. For routine detection of the mutation, a diagnostic assay was developed utilising Template-directed Dye-terminator Incorporation and Fluorescence Polarization detection (FP-TDI). |

THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.

The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:

CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.

The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
