ABSTRACT A metallic fuel mixture including solidic powders such as silicon, aluminum and magnesium together with an oxidant, and steam and hydrogen are fed into a combustor to undergo combustion therein. The combustor is positioned within a steam chamber enclosure filled with water as working fluid which is heated by the combustion. The heated water within the stream chamber enclosure is thereby converted into pressurized steam fed into a turbine for operation thereof to impart rotation to a shaft thereby propelling a sea vessel within which the steam chamber enclosure is housed. During such combustion, discharge from the combustor of a liquid by-product occurs as outflow through an exhaust funnel into a collector from which the by-product is processed for ejection into seawater without signature detection. The radiant energy generated by such combustion may be converted by photovoltaic cells within the steam chamber enclosure into electrical energy made available outside of the steam chamber enclosure, while some of the heat energy generated by the combustion within the combustor may also be converted by thermoelectric cells into electrical energy made available outside of the steam chamber enclosure.

ABSTRACT A vane for use in a gas turbine engine has a leading edge facing an upstream combustor. The vane has hollow areas that receive an impingement tube for delivering impingement air. The impingement tube includes a radially outer portion and a radially inner portion. An end wall of the radially outer portion is angled relative to a rotational axis of the turbine such that air entering the impingement tube from a radially outer source has dirt directed away from the leading edge. Thus, dirt is less likely to clog leading edge air supply holes. In one embodiment, the inner and outer portions are formed as separate pieces, and in another embodiment, the inner and outer portions are formed as a single piece.

The system may include one or more bacteria generators to provide bacteria to the biofilm and/or one or more air sources to provide an air bubble stream to the container and/or the bacteria generator. In some embodiments, bacteria may be preserved in a starvation phase. Bacteria may be incubated until they reach a starvation phase. The bacteria may then be preserved as beads or immobilized on a substrate. The preserved bacteria may be used in a system for the reduction of contaminants in water.

Optically usable surfaces are achieved on the Integrated Diamond Carrier through use of substrate crystal plane characteristics and an improved deposition arrangement.

An optical data acquisition system having a light source and a graphic display is operatively connected to the optic fiber cables through inserted optic connector cables to transmit light from the light source as a signal medium into the bearing so as to render the optic fiber cables therein operative as sensors to detect and measure wear of the entire bearing portion of the propeller shaft surface being thereby monitored. Wear measurement optical signals within the wear sensing cables are then transmitted back to the data acquisition system through the optic connector cables for display of the shaft bearing wear measurements.

ABSTRACT A low power, lightweight, collapsible and rugged antenna positioner for use in communicating with geostationary, geosynchronous and low earth orbit satellite. By collapsing, invention may be easily carried or shipped in a compact container. May be used in remote locations with simple or automated setup and orientation. Azimuth is adjusted by rotating an antenna in relation to a positioner base and elevation is adjusted by rotating an elevation motor coupled with the antenna. Manual orientation of antenna for linear polarized satellites yields lower weight and power usage. Updates ephemeris or TLE data via satellite. Algorithms used for search including Clarke Belt fallback, transponder/beacon searching switch, azimuth priority searching and tracking including uneven re-peak scheduling yield lower power usage. Orientation aid via user interface allows for smaller azimuth motor, simplifies wiring and lowers weight. Tilt compensation, bump detection and failure contingency provide robustness.

The apparatus and methods are uniquely suited for characterizing single-cycle pulses.

The instrument uses one or more gratings as dispersive elements to greatly improve the spectral resolution, and in-line optics to match the beam size in the interferometer to optimize the efficiency. The resolution can approach about 0.6 GHz at about 632.8 nm (λ/Δλ=8.4×105). A CCD or photodiode array is used as the detector and the fast Fourier transform of the fringe pattern is performed by a computer. Some embodiments employ no mechanically moving parts; therefore, they are compact and easy to align. Practical applications include remote sensing, process monitoring, and basic research. The fast response time of the detector also allows real time spectral analysis.

Cleavage of X allows separation of A from B, unmasking the normal ability of the basic amino acids in B to drag cargo C into cells near the cleavage event. X is cleaved extracellularly, preferably under physiological conditions. D-amino acids are preferred for the A and B portions, to minimize immunogenicity and nonspecific cleavage by background peptidases or proteases.

Administration of the immunogenic composition also is expected to ablate or significantly diminish the increase in the excess of intussusception observed 3 to 7 days following administration of the initial dose of rotavirus vaccine at about 2 to 4 months.

Compositions containing antigens or polynucleotides encoding antigens of the invention provide effectively targeted vaccines for prevention and treatment of HSV infection.

ABSTRACT The invention provides isolated nucleic acids molecules, designated PD-L2 nucleic acid molecules, which encode novel B7-related molecules which are ligands for PD-1. The invention also provides antisense nucleic acid molecules, recombinant expression vectors containing PD-L2 nucleic acid molecules, host cells into which the expression vectors have been introduced, and nonhuman transgenic animals in which a PD-L2 gene has been introduced or disrupted. The invention further provides isolated PD-L2 polypeptides, fusion proteins, antigenic peptides and anti-PD-L2 antibodies. The invention still further provides methods for promoting or inhibiting the interaction between PD-L2 and PD-1. The invention further provides methods of identifying compounds that upmodulate T cell activation in the presence of a PD-1-mediated signal. Diagnostic and treatment methods utilizing compositions of the invention are also provided.

While the E. chaffeensis and E. canis Dsb proteins are at most only 31% or less homologous to other known Dsb proteins, the Ehrlichia Dsbs contain a cysteine active site, Cys-Gly-Tyr-Cys, similar to those in known Dsb proteins. As predicted by 15-amino acid identical N-terminal signal peptides, the proteins are primarily localized in the periplasm of E. chaffeensis and E. canis, possibly playing a role in antigenicity and pathogenesis. The present invention provides the nucleotide and amino acid sequences and expression vectors for the E. chaffeensis and E. canis dsb genes, antisera directed against the proteins, and kits to determine whether an individual or animal is infected with a given species of Ehrlichia.

As shown in FIG. 1C the ability of endogenous SNOg to increase VE in freely behaving, conscious rates using whole-body plethysmography revealed that CSNO, GSNO and CGSNO (1 nmol each) caused equivalent increases in VE, whereas D-CSNO had no effect (left bar graph is the equivalent increases in VE, whereas D-CSNO had no effect (left bar graph is the control whereas the right bar represents administration of the respective SNO).

ABSTRACT The invention consists of a sensor with multiple indicating (sensing) electrodes covered with a selectively permeable membrane for monitoring fluid concentrations in a biological environment. The indicating electrodes respond to changes in certain analytes, such as glucose, through an enzyme-mediated reaction. The currents generated from the enzyme-mediated reactions are transmitted through radio signals to an external receiver where the information is processed and recorded. Through the use of various biomaterials and biochemicals associated with the sensor, the monitoring accuracy is improved and the overall viability is prolonged. The process of foreign body fibrosis (formation of a scar capsule around the implanted sensor) eventually limits the functional life of the device. Vapors sorbed and concentrated within the bed of the apparatus can be thermally desorbed achieving at least partial separation of vapor mixtures. The apparatus is suitable, e.g., for preconcentration and sample injection, and provides greater resolution of peaks for vapors within vapor mixtures, yielding detection levels that are 10-10,000 times better than for direct sampling and analysis systems. Features are particularly useful for continuous unattended monitoring applications.

D-amino acids are preferred for the A and B portions, to minimize immunogenicity and nonspecific cleavage by background peptidases or proteases.

Based on a specific primer design, methods include five types of amplification that proceed in a reaction chamber simultaneously. These relate to four types of multiplex amplification of a target DNA on a solid support, directed by forward and reverse complex primers immobilized to the support and a fifth type—pseudo-monoplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of multiple targets in solution, directed by a single pair of unbound universal primers. The addition of the universal primers in the reaction mixture increases the yield over the traditional “bridge” amplification on a solid support by approximately ten times. Methods that provide multitarget amplification and detection of as little as 0.45-4.5×10−12 g (equivalent to 102-103 genomes) of a bacterial genomic DNA are disclosed.

An additional structure capable of being electrically biased can be placed within the plasma to control further the extraction or retardation of particles from the plasma.

ABSTRACT The present invention relates to vaccines having an increased level of safety comprising recombinant vaccinia viruses containing an inactivated E3L region. The invention also relates to methods for stimulating a protective immune response in an immunized host using the vaccines of the invention. The invention is based on the discovery that vaccinia virus mutants having deletions in the E3L region exhibit dramatically reduced pathogenesis while remaining highly immunogenic. In addition, the invention relates to modified recombinant vaccinia viruses engineered to express heterologous polypeptides and the use of such viruses in vaccines designed to stimulate a protective immune response against such polypeptides in a host. The invention further relates to an interferon-sensitive recombinant vaccinia virus with broad host range wherein a salamander eIF2α is inserted into the viral genome in place of at least a portion of the E3L gene.

ABSTRACT In one embodiment of the invention, iCVD is used to form linear thin films using a radical initiator and an alkene. In another embodiment, iCVD is used to form crosslinked thin films by the addition of a crosslinking agent (e.g., a diacrylate or a dimethyacrylate). The incorporation of a crosslinking agent into the thin films is shown to increase systematically with its partial pressure. In one embodiment, when the crosslinker is EDGA and the monomer is HEMA it results in crosslinked P(HEMA-co-EGDA) copolymer. In another embodiment, when the crosslinker is EDGA and the monomer is VP, it results in crosslinked P(VP-co-EGDA). Disclosed are the effects of crosslinker incorporation on the thermal and the wetting properties of the polymers. The unique swelling properties of these films are also described; certain films of the present invention are hydrogels when soaked in water.

ABSTRACT A low power, lightweight, collapsible and rugged antenna positioner for use in communicating with geostationary, geosynchronous and low earth orbit satellite. By collapsing, invention may be easily carried or shipped in a compact container. May be used in remote locations with simple or automated setup and orientation. Azimuth is adjusted by rotating an antenna in relation to a positioner base and elevation is adjusted by rotating an elevation motor coupled with the antenna. Manual orientation of antenna for linear polarized satellites yields lower weight and power usage. Updates ephemeris or TLE data via satellite. Algorithms used for search including Clarke Belt fallback, transponder/beacon searching switch, azimuth priority searching and tracking including uneven re-peak scheduling yield lower power usage. Orientation aid via user interface allows for smaller azimuth motor, simplifies wiring and lowers weight. Tilt compensation, bump detection and failure contingency provide robustness.

The temperature and pressure dependent Voigt line tail spectral absorption contributing to each spectral bin is pre-computed and fit to Padé approximants for rapid and accurate accounting of neighboring-to-distant lines.

Furthermore, the oxide insulating region beneficially has a optical path of less than ¼ wavelength. The ion implanted spatial region is beneficially concentrically aligned with the oxide insulating region.

ABSTRACT A method and device for sampling pore water, including an elongated tubular outer body having a grid framework forming multiple perforations throughout the entire outer body. The grid framework surrounding the perforations has raised and beveled sides. An elongated, perforated tubular inner body is contained within the outer body. The inner body has a diameter less than a diameter of the outer body, which forms a cavity between the inner body and the outer body. The cavity is filled with an inert granular filler material. A first outer cap and a second outer cap cover respective ends of the outer body. A coupling is placed in fluid communication with the inner body and protrudes through the first outer cap. A tube is attached to the coupling protruding through the first outer cap to transfer a water sample to a sample collection site.

ABSTRACT We have shown that the control of solventogenesis and sporulation can be genetically uncoupled in C. acetobutylicum. In strain 824(pASspo), the absence of SpoIIE causes sporulation to be blocked at stage II. The cell remains in a vegetative state, and this allows solvent production to proceed for longer and for solvents to accumulate more rapidly and to a higher concentration. The characteristic drop in OD600 observed in wild type and control strains of C. acetobutylicum after 48-72 hours as the cells transition from the solventogenic phase to sporulation is notably absent in the fermentations of 824(pASspo). Mutant S (wild type background, spoIIE disrupted), Mutant BS (Mutant B background, spoIIE disrupted), Mutant HS (Mutant H background, spoIIE disrupted) and Mutant bukS (buk- background, spoIIE disrupted) were generated to create stable solvent producing bacteria with complete inactivation of the SpoIIE protein. Similarity between the SpoIIE protein of C. acetobutylicum, B. subtilis, and other Clostridial species indicates that the techniques used in C. acetobutylicum can be applied to other solvent producing Clostridia.

ABSTRACT A reduced height log periodic antenna that may safely be positioned under the rotating blades of a helicopter sitting on the ground and still resonate in the frequency range at which the antenna was originally designed to resonate. The antenna comprises a pair of antenna booms, a first plurality of vertical antenna radiating elements connected to the booms, and a second plurality of vertical antenna radiating elements connected to the booms. In addition, the antenna includes a plurality of tuned horizontal antenna radiating elements, each tuned horizontal radiating element being connected to the top of one of the second plurality of vertical antenna radiating elements, and a plurality of tuned upwardly bent horizontal antenna radiating elements, each tuned upwardly bent horizontal antenna radiating element being connected to the bottom of one of the second plurality of vertical antenna radiating elements. The antenna is characterized by the fact that the second plurality of antenna radiating elements have been shortened from their original design length to fit vertically under the rotating blades of a helicopter, and the tuned horizontal radiating elements have been added to the shortened radiating elements to bring the shortened radiating elements back to their desired frequency response.

ABSTRACT The invention is directed to methods for direct patterning of silicon. The invention provides the ability to fabricate complex surfaces in silicon with three dimensional features of high resolution and complex detail. The invention is suitable, for example, for use in soft lithography as embodiments of the invention can quickly create a master for use in soft lithography. In an embodiment of the invention, electrochemical etching of silicon, such as a silicon wafer, for example, is conducted while at least a portion of the silicon surface is exposed to an optical pattern. The etching creates porous silicon in the substrate, and removal of the porous silicon layer leaves a three-dimensional structure correlating to the optical pattern.

THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE

Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.

This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, October 07, 2008.

The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.

HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?

Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?

THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:

FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:

     National Institutes of Health (NIH)
         National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

Department of Defense (DOD)
     Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
         Army Research Office (ARO)

We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.

APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.

Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:

The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.

FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.

APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.

ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:

CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.

The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.

The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.

The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
