ABSTRACT The present invention provides systems and methods for facilitating contact between a liquid and a fluid. Such systems and methods may allow efficient removal of components from the liquid without using undesirable reducing agents. In this regard, the disclosed embodiments provide for the purification of a liquid by passing the liquid and a fluid through a porous medium. The porous medium facilitates mixing of the liquid and the fluid. A partial pressure differential of the component between the liquid and the fluid facilitates the transfer of the component from the liquid to the fluid in the mixed liquid and fluid. One embodiment of the invention relates to a method of purifying a liquid. The method includes passing a liquid, such as a fuel, and a fluid, such as a non-reactive gas, through a porous medium, the liquid containing a component, such as oxygen gas, therein. The passing causes mixing of the liquid and the fluid and transfer of at least some of the component from the liquid to the fluid. The method also includes separating the liquid and the fluid, the separated fluid including at least some of the component.

ABSTRACT A method for fabricating a quartz nanoresonator which can be integrated on a substrate, along with other electronics is disclosed. In this method a quartz substrate is bonded to a base substrate. The quartz substrate is metallized so that a bias voltage is applied to the resonator, thereby causing the quartz substrate to resonate at resonant frequency greater than 100 MHz. The quartz substrate can then be used to drive other electrical elements with a frequency equal to its resonant frequency. The quartz substrate also contains tuning pads to adjust the resonant frequency of the resonator. Additionally, a method for accurately thinning a quartz substrate of the resonator is provided. The method allows the thickness of the quartz substrate to be monitored while the quartz substrate is simultaneously thinned.

ABSTRACT A method of forming a liquid crystal device, includes: contacting an aqueous solution comprising a surfactant and a receptor molecule with a top surface of a liquid crystal. The liquid crystal is in a holding compartment of a substrate, and the receptor molecule is adsorbed on the top surface of the liquid crystal forming an interface between the liquid crystal and the aqueous solution. The receptor molecule is different than the surfactant. A method of detecting a compound in a flowing stream includes passing an aqueous solution over a top surface of a liquid crystal in a holding compartment of a substrate. The method also includes determining whether a change in the orientation of the liquid crystal occurs as the aqueous solution is passed over the top surface of the liquid crystal. A change in the orientation of the liquid crystal indicates the presence of the compound in the flowing stream.

The invention thereby provides detectable signals for rapid, specific, and sensitive detection of nucleic acids, polypeptides, and interactions thereof in vivo.

ABSTRACT A non-mechanical gimbal system is presented. The gimbal system includes a gimbal housing, including hemispherical and annular caps, rotatable sphere, and at least two curvilinear actuators. The curvilinear actuators are disposed between the rotatable sphere and gimbal housing. Curvilinear actuators rotate the rotatable sphere, via shear induced motion, with respect to the interior surface of the gimbal housing. The present invention has immediate applicability within security devices, games, toys, weapons (including guidance systems and aiming), and communication systems.

ABSTRACT A Hall thruster with a shared magnetic structure including a plurality of plasma accelerators each including an anode and a discharge zone for providing plasma discharge. An electrical circuit having one or more cathodes connected to the plurality of plasma accelerators emits electrons that are attracted to the anode in each of the plasma accelerators. A shared magnetic circuit structure establishes a transverse magnetic field in each of the plurality of plasma accelerators that creates an impedance to the flow of electrons toward the anode in each of the plurality of plasma accelerators and enables ionization of a gas moving through one or more of the plurality of plasma accelerators. The impedance localizes an axial electric field in the plurality of plasma accelerators for accelerating ionized gas through the one or more of the plurality of plasma accelerators to create thrust.

A first motor current flowing through the first wire induces a core current to flow in the magnetic core, causing the magnetic core to emit a magnetic field. A Hall effect sensor detects the magnetic field, produces an output current, and delivers the output current to a control device within a servo control system.

This is repeated until the initiator node is able to map the set of tasks to a subset of the nodes in the wireless network or until there are no additional clusters to forward the admission request to.

The change in the cantilever mass can be accurately quantified by monitoring a resonance frequency shift of the cantilever. For bio-detection, antibodies or other specific receptors of target antigens may be immobilized on the cantilever surface, preferably on the non-piezoelectric tip. For chemical detection, high surface-area selective absorbent materials are coated on the cantilever tip. Binding of the target antigens or analytes to the cantilever surface increases the cantilever mass. Detection of target antigens or analytes is achieved by monitoring the cantilever's resonance frequency and determining the resonance frequency shift that is due to the mass of the adsorbed target antigens on the cantilever surface. The use of a piezoelectric unimorph cantilever allows both electrical actuation and electrical sensing. Incorporating a non-piezoelectric tip (14) enhances the sensitivity of the sensor. In addition, the piezoelectric cantilever can withstand damping in highly viscous liquids and can be used as a viscosity sensor in wide viscosity range.

The select MPO-generated oxidation products are dityrosine, nitrotyrosine, chlorotyrosine, methionine sulphoxide or an MPO-generated lipid peroxidation product. Levels of MPO activity, MPO mass, or the select MPO-generated oxidation product in bodily samples from the test subject are then compared to a control value that is derived from measurements of MPO activity, MPO mass, or the select MPO-generated oxidation product in comparable bodily samples obtained from control population. Such comparison can also be used to determine treatment of the patient immediately at presentation in the emergency room.

ABSTRACT To identify molecular determinants of lytic bone disease in multiple myeloma, the expression profiles of ˜12,000 genes in CD138-enriched plasma cells from newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients exhibiting no radiological evidence of lytic lesions (n=28) were compared to those with ≧3 lytic lesions (n=47). Two secreted WNT signaling antagonists, soluble frizzled related protein 3 (SFRP-3/FRZB) and the human homologue of Dickkopf-1 (DKK1), were expressed in 40 of 47 with lytic bone lesions, but only 16 of 28 lacking bone lesions (P<0.05). DKK1 and FRZB were not expressed in plasma cells from 45 normal bone marrow donors or 10 Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, a related plasma cells malignancy that lacks bone disease. These data indicate that these factors are important mediators of multiple myeloma bone disease, and inhibitors of these proteins may be used to block bone disease.

The nucleic acid sequences of the invention can be integrated into various expression vectors, which in turn direct the synthesis of the corresponding proteins or peptides in a variety of hosts, particularly eukaryotic cells, such as mammalian and insect cell culture. Also disclosed are host cells transformed to produce proteins or peptides encoded by the nucleic acid sequences of the invention and isolated proteins and peptides which comprise at least a portion of a novel B lymphocyte antigen. Proteins and peptides described herein can be administered to subjects to enhance or suppress T cell-mediated immune responses.

An exemplary seizure warning method includes continuously calculating STLmax values, identifying critical sites by applying a quadratically constrained quadratic 0-1 solution to data (e.g. STLmax profiles) derived from pre-seizure onset and post-seizure onset EEG signals, monitoring a T-index curve of the identified critical sites, warning of an impending seizure, observing a seizure and then repeating the cycle by identifying critical sites using the new data, and then monitoring them.

ABSTRACT A piezoelectric cantilever with a non-piezoelectric, or piezoelectric tip useful as mass and viscosity sensors. The change in the cantilever mass can be accurately quantified by monitoring a resonance frequency shift of the cantilever. For bio-detection, antibodies or other specific receptors of target antigens may be immobilized on the cantilever surface, preferably on the non-piezoelectric tip. For chemical detection, high surface-area selective absorbent materials are coated on the cantilever tip. Binding of the target antigens or analytes to the cantilever surface increases the cantilever mass. Detection of target antigens or analytes is achieved by monitoring the cantilever's resonance frequency and determining the resonance frequency shift that is due to the mass of the adsorbed target antigens on the cantilever surface. The use of a piezoelectric unimorph cantilever allows both electrical actuation and electrical sensing. Incorporating a non-piezoelectric tip (14) enhances the sensitivity of the sensor. In addition, the piezoelectric cantilever can withstand damping in highly viscous liquids and can be used as a viscosity sensor in wide viscosity range.

A drogue parachute applies a rearward force to the launch vehicle holding the rigid trapeze in engagement with the launch vehicle, and damping the rate of rotation in the pitch plane as the rotation of the pitch plane brings a launch vehicle to a substantially vertical launch attitude, were powered flight of launch vehicle is begun. The launch vehicle follows a trajectory that crosses behind the carrier aircraft.

Exposed portions of the blanket layer are then removed, e.g., by wet etching. The printed mask and the lift-off pattern are then removed using a lift-off process that also removes any remaining portions of the blanket layer formed over the lift-off pattern. A thin-film transistor includes patterned source/drain structures that are self-aligned to an underlying gate structure by forming a photoresist lift-off pattern that is exposed and developed by a back-exposure process using the gate structure as a mask.

The target application is the metal bars (1) that have a circumference/cross-section-area ratio equal to or smaller than 4.25 when the cross section area is unity for the given shape, (2) whose cross-sections are round, oval, or in the shape of a polygon, and (3) are manufactured by mechanically cross-section reduction processes. The said metal can be steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, bronze, titanium, nickel, and so forth, and/or their alloys. The said metal bars can be at the temperature when they are being manufactured. A removable cassette includes various mirrors. A protection tube isolates the moving metal bar from the line light assembly and image acquisition camera. A contaminant reduction mechanism applies a vacuum to remove airborne contaminants.

The nanochannels can have widths of between 1 and 500 nanometers, and the width of any one nanochannel is substantially equal to the width of any other nanochannel. The member can be manufactured out a polymer such as polycarbonate and polyimide, and may also be made of silicon, glass, or ceramic. In one embodiment, the reference electrode includes means for pressurizing the electrolyte solution.

The crossbar switch is characterized by latency on the order of nanoseconds, a data rate per channel on the order of gigabits per second, essentially zero crosstalk, and detection of contention in nanoseconds or less and resolution of contention in nanoseconds or less.

ABSTRACT A search of the public human genome database identified a human EST, GenBank accession number AW293249, which has high homology to known pufferfish urocortin sequences. The full length sequence was amplified from human genomic DNA and sequenced. Sequence homology comparisons of the novel sequence with human urocortin I and urocortin II revealed that the sequence encoded a novel human urocortin, which was designated urocortin III (UcnIII). While urocortin III does not have high affinity for either CRF-R1 or CRF-R2, the affinity for CRF-R2 is greater than the affinity for CRF-R1. Urocortin III is capable stimulating cyclic AMP production in cells expressing CRF-R2α or β. Thus, the affinity is high enough that urocortin III could act as a native agonist of CRF-R2. However, it is also likely that urocortin III is a stronger agonist of a yet to be identified receptor.

ABSTRACT A heads-up display that includes a scanner and a projection assembly. The scanner generates an image by sweeping a beam of electromagnetic energy, and the projection assembly directs the image into a predetermined viewing space having a region with a substantially uniform intensity profile. Such a heads-up display can often be made smaller than a conventional heads-up display, and can often generate an image having a higher quality than an image generated by a conventional display. Furthermore, one can often calibrate and recalibrate such a display without physically modifying or replacing a component of the display or of a vehicle incorporating the display.

THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE

Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.

This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, December 02, 2008.

The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.

HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?

Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?

THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:

FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
     National Institutes of Health (NIH)
         National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

Department of Defense (DOD)
     Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
         Army Research Office (ARO)

We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.

APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.

Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:

APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC

APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)

INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.

ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.

FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.

APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.

ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:

CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.

The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.

The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.

The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
