ABSTRACT | Potent inhibitors of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) are constructed having Ki's below 200 pM and activities 102-103 times more potent than the corresponding trifluoromethyl ketones. The potent inhibitors combine several features, viz.: 1.) an α-keto heterocylic head group; 2.) a hydrocarbon linkage unit employing an optimal C12-C8 chain length; and 3.) a phenyl or other π-unsaturation corresponding to the arachidonyl Δ8,9/Δ11,12 and/or oleyl Δ9,10 positions. A preferred α-keto heterocylic head group is α-keto N4 oxazolopyridine, with incorporation of a second weakly basic nitrogen. Fatty acid amide hydrolase is an enzyme responsible for the degradation of oleamide (an endogenous sleep-inducing lipid) and anandamide (an endogenous ligand for cannabinoid receptors). |

ABSTRACT | Hypercellular nonhuman organisms have functionally inactivated expression of a cyclin inhibitor gene, especially p27. The growth rate of nonhuman organisms are increased such that a desired size is attained more quickly than as compared to nonvariant organisms. Inhibitors of the p27 cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor protein or sequences encoding the protein modulate vertebrate cell cycle progression and increase the proportion of dividing cells to non-dividing cells in a population of treated cells. As the proportion of dividing cells increases, the cell population, e.g., hematopoietic progenitor (stem) cells, is more efficiently used for gene therapy applications. Transgenic animals and plants, and knockout alleles are provided. |

ABSTRACT | A method for fabricating a quartz nanoresonator which can be integrated on a substrate, along with other electronics is disclosed. In this method a quartz substrate is bonded to a base substrate. The quartz substrate is metallized so that a bias voltage is applied to the resonator, thereby causing the quartz substrate to resonate at resonant frequency greater than 100 MHz. The quartz substrate can then be used to drive other electrical elements with a frequency equal to its resonant frequency. The quartz substrate also contains tuning pads to adjust the resonant frequency of the resonator. Additionally, a method for accurately thinning a quartz substrate of the resonator is provided. The method allows the thickness of the quartz substrate to be monitored while the quartz substrate is simultaneously thinned. |

ABSTRACT | An inertial shock bandpass filter for detecting a shock event between first and second acceleration levels. The inertial shock bandpass filter includes a primary inertial element and at least one secondary inertial element supported by respective spring arrangements. The inertial elements include complementary engageable gripping surfaces, which engage in response to an acceleration above the second acceleration level to prevent movement of the primary inertial element and prevent latch engagement. The primary inertial element will, in response to an acceleration between the first and second acceleration levels, engage the latch. An acceleration level below the first acceleration level is insufficient to cause either an engagement of the gripping surfaces or a latching of the primary inertial element. |

ABSTRACT | Synthesis of chain molecules such as DNA is carried out in a conduit having an interior channel with an inlet end and an outlet end. At least one wall of the conduit is substantially transparent to selected wavelengths of light. Solid carrier particles are contained within the interior channel of the conduit. A plurality of controllable light sources are mounted at spaced locations along the length of the transparent wall of the conduit to allow selective illumination of separated sections of the particles within the conduit. When a light source is turned on, a photodeprotecting group is removed from the carrier particles in the section that is illuminated by the light source. A reagent containing a selected base is flowed through the conduit so that the base will attach to the carrier particles in those sections which have been exposed to light and deprotected. Reagents may be applied which subsequently again protect the bases followed by selective application of light to certain sections, removal of the deprotection group, and attachment of a new base, with the process repeated until desired sequences have been formed on the carrier particles at each of the separated sections in the conduit. The synthesized molecules may then be removed for direct use or further processing. |

ABSTRACT | An improved multi-junction waveguide circulator overlaps two quarter-wave dielectric transformer sections so that the transitional sections occur concurrently in the same length of waveguide. Consequently, the two quarter-wavelength sections require a total length of between one-quarter wavelength and one-half wavelength, with no air gap between the two sections along the length of the internal cavity. The improved waveguide circulator can be implemented in variations from a minimum of two ferrite circulator elements held in close proximity to one another to any number of ferrite elements as required to achieve the desired isolation performance or to create a switch matrix with any combination of input and output ports. The improved waveguide circulator minimizes the length of the transitions between adjacent ferrite elements and thus reduces losses, component size, and mass. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides a method of selecting receiving pairs from a set of at least three receivers that may be used to localize an emitter. This involves identifying the set of at least three receivers to be used to localize the emitter. An isochron may be developed for each receiver pair wherein each isochron has a finite width. The intersection of two isochrons creates an uncertainty parallelogram. When the intersection of two isochrones is substantially orthogonal or subtends a relatively large angle, uncertainty based on the intersection angle is minimized and uncertainty becomes primarily a function of isochron width. To determine acceptable or best receiver pairs to be used, the intersections of each isochron pair may be analyzed. The uncertainty parallelograms and intersection angles are compared for each pair of intersecting isochrons. Then, receiver pairs that produced the isochrons that result in a reduced or compact uncertainty parallelogram may be selected. |

ABSTRACT | Method and apparatus for controlling magnitude and frequency of vibrotactile sensations for haptic feedback devices. A haptic feedback device, such as a gamepad controller, mouse, remote control, etc., includes a housing, an actuator coupled to the housing, and a mass. In some embodiments, the mass can be oscillated by the actuator and a coupling between the actuator and the mass or between the mass and the housing has a variable compliance. Varying the compliance allows vibrotactile sensations having different magnitudes for a given drive signal to be output. In other embodiments, the actuator is a rotary actuator and the mass is an eccentric mass rotatable by the actuator about an axis of rotation. The eccentric mass has an eccentricity that can be varied relative to the axis of rotation while the mass is rotating. Varying the eccentricity allows vibrotactile sensations having different magnitudes for a given drive signal. |

ABSTRACT | An RF receiver (12) includes a channel estimator (52). The channel estimator (52) includes a channel estimation filter (82), error signal generator (84), and normalized Least-Mean-Square (NLMS) filter-definition generator 86. The filter (82), error generator (84) and NLMS filter-definition generator (86) function together as an adaptive estimator. An error signal (90) is formed with a received signal (48). The filter (82) filters an estimated transmit signal (74) constructed from lower confidence decision data (66) and higher confidence known preamble data (30″). An adaptive filter definition (94) is formed in a feedback, loop which minimizes correlation between the estimated transmit signal (74) and the error signal (90). A convergence signal (122) is modulated in synchronism with the changes between lower and higher confidence data in the estimated transmit signal (74). |

ABSTRACT | A personal navigation system including one or more sensors that sense motion of a human and output signals corresponding to the motion of the human and a human-motion-classification processing block that receives sensor data from the one or more sensors. The human-motion-classification processing block includes a Kalman filter processing block, an inertial navigation processing block, and a motion classification processing block. The Kalman filter processing block executes a Kalman filter that provides corrections to the motion classification processing block. The inertial navigation processing block receives input sensor data from the sensors and outputs a navigation solution. The motion classification processing block executes a motion classification algorithm that implements a step-time threshold between two types of motion, identifies a type of motion based on the received sensor data, and outputs a distance-traveled estimate to the Kalman filter processing block based on the identified type of motion. |

ABSTRACT | In a distributed sensor network, one or more devices, for example, forming a collaborative group, are associated with a physical phenomenon based on geographical proximity. The sensor network is capable of detecting new phenomena and changing the membership of the collaborative group as the phenomenon changes. Sensors not associated with a detected phenomenon are available to detect new phenomenon, and one group may exist per phenomenon. Upon detection of a phenomenon, a group of nodes is formed and a leader node is elected. As the phenomenon changes over time, new devices come into proximity of the phenomenon and are prevented from forming independent groups associated with the phenomenon. This accomplished in a decentralized way with communication restricted to local neighbors. In a tracking sensor network using a relatively small number of sensors, the sensors are active and maintain a coherent belief associating their measurements with a single common vehicle. |

ABSTRACT | An apparatus and method for monitoring and controlling the combustion process in a combustion system to determine the amplitude and/or frequencies of dynamic pressure oscillations during combustion. An electrode in communication with the combustion system senses hydrocarbon ions and/or electrons produced by the combustion process and calibration apparatus calibrates the relationship between the standard deviation of the current in the electrode and the amplitudes of the dynamic pressure oscillations by applying a substantially constant voltage between the electrode and ground resulting in a current in the electrode and by varying one or more of (1) the flow rate of the fuel, (2) the flow rate of the oxidant, (3) the equivalence ratio, (4) the acoustic tuning of the combustion system, and (5) the fuel distribution in the combustion chamber such that the amplitudes of the dynamic pressure oscillations in the combustion chamber are calculated as a function of the standard deviation of the electrode current. Thereafter, the supply of fuel and/or oxidant is varied to modify the dynamic pressure oscillations. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed is a method that achieves water desalination by utilizing and optimizing clathrate hydrate phenomena. Clathrate hydrates are crystalline compounds of gas and water that desalinate water by excluding salt molecules during crystallization. Contacting a hydrate forming gaseous species with water will spontaneously form hydrates at specific temperatures and pressures through the extraction of water molecules from the bulk phase followed by crystallite nucleation. Subsequent dissociation of pure hydrates yields fresh water and, if operated correctly, allows the hydrate-forming gas to be efficiently recycled into the process stream. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed is a method for promoting auto-induction of transcription of cloned DNA in cultures of bacterial cells grown batchwise, the transcription being under the control of a promoter whose activity can be induced by an exogenous inducer whose ability to induce said promoter is dependent on the metabolic state of said bacterial cells. Initially, a culture media is provided which includes: i) an inducer that causes induction of transcription from said promoter in said bacterial cells; and ii) a metabolite that prevents induction by said inducer, the concentration of said metabolite being adjusted so as to substantially preclude induction by said inducer in the early stages of growth of the bacterial culture, but such that said metabolite is depleted to a level that allows induction by said inducer at a later stage of growth. The culture medium is inoculated with a bacterial inoculum, the inoculum comprising bacterial cells containing cloned DNA, the transcription of which is induced by said inducer. The culture is then incubated under conditions appropriate for growth of the bacterial cells. |

ABSTRACT | One or more disc-shaped angular shear plates each include a region thereon having a thickness that varies with a nonlinear function. For the case of two such shear plates, they are positioned in a facing relationship and rotated relative to each other. Light passing through the variable thickness regions in the angular plates is refracted. By properly timing the relative rotation of the plates and by the use of an appropriate polynomial function for the thickness of the shear plate, light passing therethrough can be focused at variable positions. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed are a polyacrylamide-based method of fabricating surface-bound peptide and protein arrays, the arrays themselves, and a method of using the arrays to detect proteins and to measure their concentration, binding affinity, and kinetics. Peptides, proteins, fusion proteins, protein complexes, and the like, are labeled with an acrylic moiety and attached to acrylic-functionalized glass surfaces through a copolymerization with acrylic monomer. The specific attachment of GST-green fluorescent protein (GFP) fusion protein was more than 7-fold greater than the nonspecific attachment of non-acrylic labeled GST-GFP. Surface-attached GST-GFP (0.32 ng /mm2) was detectable by direct measurement of GFP fluorescence and this lower detection limit was reduced to 0.080 ng/mm2 using indirect antibody-based detection. The polyacrylamide-based surface attachment strategy was also used to measure the kinetics of substrate phosphorylation by the kinase c-Src. The surface attachment strategy is applicable to the proteomics field and addresses denaturation and dehydration problems associated with protein microarray development. |

ABSTRACT | Binary data signal multi-line interval encoding and decoding arrangements supporting high speed data communications consistent with certain embodiments produce a signal having a plurality of pulses with a minimum pulse duration of T. The pulses are arranged in a signal pattern selected as one of M possible signal patterns of L bits transmitted over N time intervals, with each time interval being of T seconds in duration, to represent one of M possible message sequence, where M>2N. The plurality of pulses have transitions that occur at times falling between the boundaries of the time interval T. Embodiments may be implemented in hardware, with a computer executing a software program within, or with both. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract. |

ABSTRACT | A method to efficiently deal with FEXT crosstalk in wireline communication system via MIMO equalization is presented. A MIMO-DFE based receiver architecture is developed to demonstrate the advantage over the traditional receiver design. A MIMO structure for systems with TH precoding is also developed for 10GBASE-T application. The proposed architecture overcomes the limitation of the traditional schemes and achieves a better SNR performance and lower receiver complexity. The proposed method relies on the fact that FEXT inherently contains information about the symbols transmitted from the three far end transmitters and it can be viewed as a signal rather than noise. Therefore, MIMO techniques are applied to turn FEXT into a benefit for the receiver design. |

ABSTRACT | A method of designing a polynucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide sequence of a predetermined polypeptide is provided. A frequency lookup table corresponding to an expression system is obtained. The table comprises a plurality of sequence elements and a plurality of frequency ranges, each frequency range for a corresponding sequence element. Each frequency range is a range of frequencies with which a corresponding sequence element can occur in a polynucleotide. The polynucleotide sequence is defined using the frequency lookup table by determining, for each respective sequence element in the frequency lookup table, whether the respective sequence element encodes a portion of the polypeptide sequence. When the respective sequence element encodes a portion of the polypeptide sequence, the sequence element is incorporated into the polynucleotide at a frequency of occurrence that is within the frequency range specified for the respective sequence element in the lookup table. The polynucleotide sequence is then outputted. |

ABSTRACT | A method of determining a property that affects expression of polynucleotides in an expression system. A plurality of polynucleotides, each encoding a polypeptide sequence, is constructed. An amino acid is encoded a plurality of times in both a first and second polynucleotide in the plurality. The amino acid is encodable by a plurality of synonymous codons including a first codon. The first codon is in the first polynucleotide at a first frequency relative to other synonymous codons, and is in the second polynucleotide at a second frequency relative to other synonymous codons. The first and second frequencies are different. Each polynucleotide is individually expressed in the expression system to measure an expression property value of the polynucleotides, thereby determining a property that affects expression of polynucleotides. The property is an effect that a frequency of use of one or more codons has on expression of polynucleotides in the expression system. |

ABSTRACT | A digital lithography system including a droplet source (printhead) for selectively ejecting liquid droplets of a phase-change masking material, and an imaging system for capturing (generating) image data representing printed features formed by the ejected liquid droplets. The system also includes a digital control system that detects defects in the printed features, for example, by comparing the image data with stored image data. The digital control system then modifies the printed feature to correct the defect, for example, by moving the printhead over the defect and causing the printhead to eject droplets onto the defect's location. In one embodiment, a single-printhead secondary printer operates in conjunction with a multi-printhead main printer to correct defects. |

ABSTRACT | Techniques are presented for determining a first set of display elements, each display element associated with a first display characteristic. An interesting element in the first set of display elements is determined. A second set of elements related to the interesting element is determined. A third set of elements based on the first and second set of elements is determined using intersection, union, subtraction addition and other logical operations. A third set of elements not yet added to the element collection is determined. The elements in the third set are associated with a second or ghosted display characteristic. The elements in the third set are inserted within the sorted context of the visualization based on spatial distortion rules which help to preserve spatial memory cues in the visualization of the element collection. The elements may be documents in an information repository, linked contact information, linked information records in a database or other types of information. |

ABSTRACT | An apparatus having a plurality of coils (e.g., numerous thin-film coils formed in an array on a flex circuit), each coil acting as an excitation unit that generates an alternating excitation magnetic signal; and as a sensor configured to detect an eddy-current signal's phase and amplitude changes relative to the excitation magnetic signal. In some embodiments, the apparatus electronically scans a surface (e.g., of a metal plate) by successively switching to individual ones of the plurality of excitation/sensing coils (using, e.g., an analog multiplexer) without physical movement in order to detect anomalous signal changes in a manner that reduces signal changes due to probe lift-off relative to the surface. In some embodiments, the coils are placed across a large area of interest, for inspection of a large surface area in a few seconds without moving the apparatus. This can provide high-sensitivity detection and an accurate indication of flaw locations. |

How To Use This Page
THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.
This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, July 14, 2009.
The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.

Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
