ABSTRACT An article for use in an aerosol device, for producing an aerosol of a drug composition is disclosed. The article includes a heat-conductive substrate having a surface with a selected surface area, and a drug composition film on the substrate surface having a selected film thickness of between 0.05 and 20 μm. The film thickness is such that an aerosol formed by vaporizing the drug composition by heating the substrate and condensing the vaporized compound contains 10% or less drug-degradation product and at least 50% of the total amount of drug composition contained in the film. The selected substrate surface area is such as to yield an effective human therapeutic dose of the drug aerosol. Also disclosed are methods of making and using the article.

ABSTRACT The present invention relates to recombinant Adenoviruses (Ad) which function as helper viruses to gutted Ad viruses lacking viral coding sequences. The recombinant Ad of the present invention comprise a binding site of the E. coli Lac repressor protein embedded within the packaging domain. Available Lac repressor protein binds to its operator site within the helper virus packaging domain, precluding the binding of natural packaging factors. The present invention also provides recombinant Ad which in addition to having a binding site for the Lac repressor protein within the packaging domain, also comprise coding sequence for the Lac repressor protein under the control of a promoter which functions in producer cells. Methods for suppressing packaging of helper Ad during packaging of a gutted Ad vector are also provided as are methods of producing recombinant helper Ad using lactose or lactose derivative as a regulatory molecule. Temperature shift may also be used to regulate growth of a recombinant helper Ad. In addition, methods of producing a gutted Ad vector substantially free of helper Ad are provided.

ABSTRACT The autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) represent a growing and heterogeneous clinical phenotype with ongoing discovery of causative etiologies. Methods: The authors collected DNA and clinically characterized a three-generation Filipino family segregating a dominant ataxia. Following elimination of several known SCA loci, a genome-wide linkage study was undertaken with additional fine mapping of 19q13. Results: Clinical characterization of affected family members revealed cerebellar signs including gait ataxia, limb ataxia/dysmetria, titubation, hypotonia, dysarthria, and nystagmus. Linkage was found in a ˜4 cM region of 19q13 bounded by markers D19S867 and D19S553, with a maximum LOD score of 3.89 at markers D19S904, D19S246, and D19S907. This region overlaps with, though markedly reduces the previously described SCA13 locus. Conclusion: An autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia clinically distinguishable from SCA13 overlaps with the SCA13 locus on chromosome 19q13.3.

The present invention therefore provides for many new useful therapeutic di- or tri-hydroxy derivatives of EPA or DHA (resolvins) that diminish, prevent, or eliminate inflammation or PMN migration, for example. The present invention also provides methods of use, methods of preparation, and packaged pharmaceuticals for use as medicaments for the compounds disclosed throughout the specification.

ABSTRACT Methods of treating or preventing a disease or disorder in a subject are provided by the present invention which include administering a composition including a therapeutically effective amount of a protein kinase C (PKC) zeta inhibitor. A disease or disorder treated or prevented by administration of a PKC zeta inhibitor is characterized by abnormal vascular permeability. Diseases or disorders treated or prevented by administration of a composition including a therapeutically effective amount of a PKC zeta inhibitor include cancer, an ischemic condition and microvascular complications of a systemic or local condition in the subject, such as diabetes and/or diabetic macular edema. Additionally, methods of inhibiting PKC zeta are provided which include incubating PKC zeta in vivo, in vitro and/or in silico with a PKC zeta inhibitor.

In an exemplary embodiment, the system is disposed within a motorized vehicle to maintain a sensor window used with optical equipment clean during system operations.

ABSTRACT Molten droplets of a metal fuel, such as aluminum, are dispersed into air or water for a reaction releasing energy for military or other purposes. In one warhead embodiment, a cylinder of solid metal is disposed within a ceramic heat insulator; heaters of thermite-like material are embedded in the metal; and an explosive dispersing charge is disposed around or at one end of the cylinder. On activation, the heaters are ignited to melt the metal, and the charge then detonated to disperse droplets of the molten metal. In a related embodiment, the metal and heaters are within a containment having an atomizing nozzle at one end and, oppositely of the metal from the nozzle, a piston and gas generator. When the metal is melted, the gas generator is activated to expel molten metal droplets from the nozzle. The fuel may be pressed particles heated below the melting point and then dispersed by a charge providing enough heat to melt the particles; may be a single component, fuel-rich thermite compound; and may include droplet surface tension reducing additives. Advantages are that the weight and volume of a warhead do not include explosives, binders, and underwater-use oxidizers employed with fuel particles in conventional energetic materials. A warhead may thus have greater density for effective penetration; and, since the fuel is not incorporated in an explosive, dispersing charges can be removed until use, and metal fuels hazardous when incorporated in an explosive can be used.

The P4.33:IGFBP-3 system of the present invention can be used, inter alia, in screening and diagnostic assays, and for therapeutic methods for cancer treatment and tumor suppression.

ABSTRACT The ErbB-2 receptor, a member of the tyrosine kinase type 1 family of receptors, has been implicated in many human malignancies. Bacteriophage display technology was employed to identify peptides that bound to the extracellular domain of human ErbB-2. The peptide KCCYSL, most frequently occurring in the affinity selected population, was chemically synthesized and characterized for its binding activities to the recombinant extracellular domain of ErbB-2. The synthetic peptide exhibits high specificity to ErbB-2 as well as to ErbB-1, another member of ErbB family. Thus, this peptide can be employed in cancer imaging or therapeutic agent targeting to malignant cells ErbB-2 receptor.

The solvent may comprise a mixture of materials in which at least 50%, on a weight basis, of the materials have an oxygen solubility of at least 0.1760 cc O2/cc at STP. Also disclosed is a method for optimizing the composition of an electrolyte for a metal-oxygen battery by selecting the solvent for the electrolyte from those materials which will dissolve the electrolyte salt and which have a solubility for oxygen which is at least 0.1150 cc O2/cc at STP.

ABSTRACT A fuel cell and a method for using the fuel cell to make electricity, in which the fuel cell has an anode half-cell having an electrocatalytic anode and a liquid anolyte that is substantially isopropanol dissolved in seawater. The fuel cell has a cathode half-cell having an electrocatalytic cathode and a liquid catholyte that is substantially hydrogen peroxide dissolved in slightly acidic seawater. The half-cells share a common proton exchange membrane. When the anode and cathode are in electrical connection the isopropanol is oxidized to carbon dioxide, which is fugitive, and the hydrogen peroxide is reduced to water. In the method, the anolyte and the catholyte, which are in effect the fuel of the fuel cell, are metered and re-circulated as needed to produce the necessary electrical power. The electrocatalytic electrodes are typically comprised of palladium and iridium alloys.

The method further provides contacting that functionalized support with a precursor having a hydroxyl protecting group and a phosphorous derivative reactive group to produce internucleotide linkage. The resulting compound is then treated to both remove the hydroxyl protecting group on the precursor, and to oxidize the internucleotide bond.

When the ferroelastic ceramic particulates are subjected to stress, such as the cyclic stress experienced during vibration of the material, internal stresses in the ceramic cause the material to deform via twinning, domain rotation or domain motion thereby dissipating the vibrational energy. The ferroelastic ceramic particulates may also act as reinforcements to improve the mechanical properties of the composites. The composite materials may be used in various structural components in vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, buildings and tools.

ABSTRACT The objective of this patent is to develop new signal processing algorithms for a wide-band circular electronically scanned array (CESA) or a wideband linear electronically scanned array (LESA) for use in surveillance and communications applications, where a sequence of pulses are transmitted and their returns are collected by the array for further processing. Instead of partitioning the entire wideband frequency into various subbands and then processing them separately using narrowband schemes, a frequency focusing method is proposed here to compensate and focus the wideband spatio-temporal data into a single narrow frequency band. This is made possible by operating with a pre-computed frequency focusing matrix that transforms the data from various frequency slots that are spread across the entire wideband region into a common narrowband frequency for the array outputs. Finally the focused narrowband data can be processed using conventional space-time adaptive processing methods to suppress the clutter/noise returns and detect any targets present.

The method further comprises (c) setting a predetermined connectivity confidence interval minimum; (d) comparing each connectivity confidence interval for each RF link to the predetermined connectivity confidence interval minimum to determine which are greater than or equal to the predetermined connectivity confidence interval; (e) assembling each RF link corresponding to each connectivity confidence interval that is greater than or equal to the predetermined connectivity confidence interval together to identify various routes through the RF network; (f) calculating a resultant connectivity confidence interval for each route by multiplying together each connectivity confidence interval for each RF link of each particular route; and (g) comparing each resultant connectivity confidence interval to identify the route with the greatest resultant connectivity confidence interval. An apparatus for carrying out such a method is also presented.

In some embodiments, the substrate, as a carbon nanotube fiber end, is brought into contact with a hot stamp (typically at 200-800° C.), and is kept in contact with the hot stamp until the morphology/patterns on the hot stamp have been transferred to the substrate. In some embodiments, the hot stamp is made of material comprising one or more transition metals (Fe, Ni, Co, Pt, Ag, Au, etc.), which can catalyze the etching reaction of carbon with H2, CO2, H2O, and/or O2. Such methods can (1) polish the carbon nanotube-containing substrate with a microscopically smooth finish, and/or (2) transfer pre-defined patterns from the hot stamp to the substrate. Such polished or patterned carbon nanotube substrates can find application as carbon nanotube electrodes, field emitters, and field emitter arrays for displays and electron sources.

ABSTRACT In one general embodiment, a method for deflecting an optical signal input into a waveguide is provided. In operation, an optical input signal is propagated through a waveguide. Additionally, an optical control signal is applied to a mask positioned relative to the waveguide such that the application of the optical control signal to the mask is used to influence the optical input signal propagating in the waveguide. Furthermore, the deflected optical input signal output from the waveguide is detected in parallel on an array of detectors. In another general embodiment, a beam deflecting structure is provided for deflecting an optical signal input into a waveguide, the structure comprising at least one wave guiding layer for guiding an optical input signal and at least one masking layer including a pattern configured to influence characteristics of a material of the guiding layer when an optical control signal is passed through the masking layer in a direction of the guiding layer. In another general embodiment, a system is provided including a waveguide, an attenuating mask positioned on the waveguide, and an optical control source positioned to propagate pulsed laser light towards the attenuating mask and the waveguide such that a pattern of the attenuating mask is applied to the waveguide and material properties of at least a portion of the waveguide are influenced.

ABSTRACT A robot platform includes perceptors, locomotors, and a system controller, which executes instructions for autonomously navigating a robot. The instructions repeat, on each iteration through an event timing loop, the acts of defining an event horizon based on the robot's current velocity, detecting a range to obstacles around the robot, testing for an event horizon intrusion by determining if any range to the obstacles is within the event horizon, and adjusting rotational and translational velocity of the robot accordingly. If the event horizon intrusion occurs, rotational velocity is modified by a proportion of the current rotational velocity reduced by a proportion of the range to the nearest obstacle and translational velocity is modified by a proportion of the range to the nearest obstacle. If no event horizon intrusion occurs, translational velocity is set as a ratio of a speed factor relative to a maximum speed.

ABSTRACT Class network routing is implemented in a network such as a computer network comprising a plurality of parallel compute processors at nodes thereof. Class network routing allows a compute processor to broadcast a message to a range (one or more) of other compute processors in the computer network, such as processors in a column or a row. Normally this type of operation requires a separate message to be sent to each processor. With class network routing pursuant to the invention, a single message is sufficient, which generally reduces the total number of messages in the network as well as the latency to do a broadcast. Class network routing is also applied to dense matrix inversion algorithms on distributed memory parallel supercomputers with hardware class function (multicast) capability. This is achieved by exploiting the fact that the communication patterns of dense matrix inversion can be served by hardware class functions, which results in faster execution times.

The opposing surface of the diode contacts the ring diode pad on either the DC (+/−) output terminal ring. Two conductive posts, each of which are connected to only one of the DC (+/−) output terminal rings permit external connection to a main rotor winding.

Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.

The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.

HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?

Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?

THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:

FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
     National Institutes of Health (NIH)
         National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

Department of Defense (DOD)
     Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
         Army Research Office (ARO)

We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.

APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.

Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:

The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.

The date of the patent application including the day of the week.

APPL NO

ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:

CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.

The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.

The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
