ABSTRACT | The MEMS Sensor Suite on a Chip provides the capability, monolithically integrated onto one MEMS chip, to sense temperature, humidity, and two axes of acceleration. The device incorporates a MEMS accelerometer, a MEMS humidity sensor, and a MEMS temperature sensor on one chip. These individual devices incorporate proof masses, suspensions, humidity sensitive capacitors, and temperature sensitive resistors (thermistors) all fabricated in a common fabrication process that allows them to be integrated onto one micromachined chip. The device can be fabricated in a simple micromachining process that allows its size to be miniaturized for embedded and portable applications. During operation, the sensor suite chip monitors temperature levels, humidity levels, and acceleration levels in two axes. External circuitry allows sensor readout, range selection, and signal processing. |

ABSTRACT | Self-leveling legs are used to accommodate landing a ducted fan hovercraft on a sloped surface such as a roof-top. These legs move to accommodate a variation of slope within their range of motion irrespective to the azimuth of the vehicle body. The configuration and operation of the landing legs allow the hovercraft to land in a stable fashion with the hovercraft vehicle body maintained in a vertical orientation. The basic kinematics of the present invention is the displacement of one landing leg upwards is connected by a horizontal member to the opposite leg and displaces it downwards, and visa-versa. Planar surface contact is accomplished by the unique curvature of the legs and the splay of the legs from the vehicle body. |

ABSTRACT | The present disclosure is broadly directed to a method for designing new MEMS micro-movers, particularly suited for, but not limited to, CMOS fabrication techniques, that are capable of large lateral displacement for tuning capacitors, fabricating capacitors, self-assembly of small gaps in CMOS processes, fabricating latching structures and other applications where lateral micro-positioning on the order of up to 10 μm, or greater, is desired. Principles of self-assembly and electro-thermal actuation are used for designing micro-movers. In self-assembly, motion is induced in specific beams by designing a lateral effective residual stress gradient within the beams. The lateral residual stress gradient arises from purposefully offsetting certain layers of one material versus another material. For example, lower metal layers may be side by side with dielectric layers, both of which are positioned beneath a top metal layer of a CMOS-MEMS beam. In electro-thermal actuation, motion is induced in specific beams by designing a lateral gradient of temperature coefficient of expansion (TCE) within the beams. The lateral TCE gradient is achieved in the same manner as with self-assembly, by purposefully offsetting the lower metal layers with layers of dielectric with respect to the top metal layer of a CMOS-MEMS beam. A heater resistor, usually made from a CMOS polysilicon layer, is embedded into the beam or into an adjacent assembly to heat the beam. When heated, the TCE gradient will cause a stress gradient in the beam, resulting in the electro-thermal actuation. Because of the rules governing abstracts, this abstract should not be used to construe the claims. |

ABSTRACT | A method of making a Lateral-Moving Micromachined Thermal Bimorph which provides the capability of achieving in-plane thermally-induced motion on a microchip, as opposed to the much more common out-of-plane, or vertical, motion seen in many devices. The present invention employs a novel fabrication process to allow the fabrication of a lateral bimorph in a fundamentally planar set of processes. In addition, the invention incorporates special design features that allow the bimorph to maintain material interfaces. |

ABSTRACT | Single-crystalline growth is realized using a liquid-phase crystallization approach involving the inhibition of defects typically associated with liquid-phase crystalline growth of lattice mismatched materials. According to one example embodiment, a semiconductor device structure includes a substantially single-crystal region. A liquid-phase material, such as Ge or a semiconductor compound, is crystallized to form the single-crystal region using an approach involving defect inhibition for the promotion of single-crystalline growth. In some instances, this defect inhibition involves the reduction and/or elimination of defects using a relatively small physical opening via which a crystalline growth front propagates. In other instances, this defect inhibition involves causing a change in crystallization front direction relative to a crystallization seed location. The relatively small physical opening and/or the change in crystalline front direction may be implemented, for example, using a material that is substantially unreactive with the liquid-phase material to contain the crystalline growth. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides for identification of agents that induce growth arrest and survival of cancer cells, which remain dormant in bone marrow, thus preventing their eradication through use of standard chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2), a mammary differentiation factor abundant in the bone marrow stroma, induces growth arrest of relatively differentiated breast cancer cells and restricts their survival to fibronectin by upregulating integrin α5β 1. Most of the FGF-2-arrested cells fail to establish optimal ligation to fibronectin and undergo cell death. Cells that do attach to fibronectin, another major constituent of the bone marrow microenvironment, stay alive and growth-arrested for many weeks. Using function-blocking antibodies and peptides, a specific contribution of α5β1-fibronectin interaction in maintaining survival of growth-arrested cells was demonstrated. The present invention thus allows for methods, agents and pharmaceutical compositions that can be used to potentiate the activity of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. |

ABSTRACT | A method for fabricating a quartz nanoresonator which can be integrated on a substrate, along with other electronics is disclosed. In this method a quartz substrate is bonded to a base substrate. The quartz substrate is metallized so that a bias voltage is applied to the resonator, thereby causing the quartz substrate to resonate at resonant frequency greater than 100 MHz. The quartz substrate can then be used to drive other electrical elements with a frequency equal to its resonant frequency. The quartz substrate also contains tuning pads to adjust the resonant frequency of the resonator. Additionally, a method for accurately thinning a quartz substrate of the resonator is provided. The method allows the thickness of the quartz substrate to be monitored while the quartz substrate is simultaneously thinned. |

ABSTRACT | One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that biases a floating node within an integrated circuit. During operation, the system first identifies the floating node within the integrated circuit to be biased. The system then determines a desired bias voltage. Next, the system couples a low-power bias source to the floating node to supply the desired bias voltage, wherein the floating node is biased without stopping data transmission through the floating node during biasing. |

ABSTRACT | A method and apparatus use a photonic-crystal fiber having a very large core while maintaining a single transverse mode. In some fiber lasers and amplifiers having large cores problems exist related to energy being generated at multiple-modes (i.e., polygamy), and of mode hopping (i.e., promiscuity) due to limited control of energy levels and fluctuations. The problems of multiple-modes and mode hopping result from the use of large-diameter waveguides, and are addressed by the invention. This is especially true in lasers using large amounts of energy (i.e., lasers in the one-megawatt or more range). By using multiple small waveguides in parallel, large amounts of energy can be passed through a laser, but with better control such that the aforementioned problems can be reduced. An additional advantage is that the polarization of the light can be maintained better than by using a single fiber core. |

ABSTRACT | A YAG/Nd:YAG block where an Nd:YAG block ends in a peak integrated inside a YAG block. The YAG block has reflective surfaces positioned at 45° to one another. The angled reflective surfaces serve as a “mirror” within the laser cavity to effectively increase the length of the cavity by a factor greater than 2. Fused to the output end of the laser cavity are a polarizer, an active/passive Q-switch, a one quarter waveplate and an output coupler. In operation, the laser cavity is pumped either from the side or the end of the cavity. The optical components of the present invention are bonded to form one optical ‘block’. All the components are prealigned during the crystal manufacturing process to form the optical laser cavity. The width of the cavity should be selected such that nearly all of the laser diode pump output is absorbed by the cavity. |

ABSTRACT | A camera for aerial photography includes a reference projector that projects collimated beams of light into the optical system entrance aperture which are imaged by an image recording device. The beams produce fiducial images present in every image captured by the imaging recording device. The fiducial images can be used to characterize the performance of the optical system and derive distortion correction coefficients. The distortion correction coefficients can be applied to a portion of an image, such as a group of pixels, or to the entire image, to thereby compensate for distortions in the optical system. In some embodiments, e.g., airborne cameras, the projector is rigidly coupled to an inertial measurement unit. The ability of the airborne camera to perform object geolocation from imagery is improved. The fiducial images enable optical system performance to be characterized and distortion correction coefficients to be obtained and thereby improve the accuracy of a ray angle calculation to the object of interest. Furthermore, the ray angle can be related to an inertial measurement system coordinate system using a direction cosine matrix. |

ABSTRACT | Methods and apparatus for simulating a distributed business process are disclosed. The methods and apparatus simulate an interdependent business process, such as a financial transaction system, in a secure distributed manner. Each business entity that is part of the interdependent business process models itself on a local client device at any chosen level of detail. A simulation server connects the separate client based simulations into one large simulation. Details of each local simulation may be hidden from other simulation participants. However, interruptions in business flow caused by simulated disruptions introduced at the simulation server and/or a client device are propagated to all of the effected simulation participants via the simulation server. In addition, if a client based model is not available, the server supplies a software agent to replace the inputs and outputs normally associated with that portion of the overall simulation. |

ABSTRACT | A system for formal verification of bounded fairness properties of pseudo random number generators and arbiters that use random priority-based arbitration schemes. The formal verification system determines an upper bound of a request-to-grant delay of an arbiter in terms of a number of complete random sequences. The formal verification system also determines, in terms of a number of clock cycles, an upper bound and a lower bound of a length of a complete random sequence in the random number sequence generated by a random number generator used by the arbiter. The formal verification system then determines a worst case request-to-grant delay bounds of the arbiter system, in terms of a number of clock cycles, by combining the upper bound of the request-to-grant delay of the arbiter with the upper bound of the length of the complete random sequence and the lower bound of the length of the complete random sequence. |

ABSTRACT | A computer system may be configured to dynamically select a memory virtualization and corresponding virtual-to-physical address translation technique during execution of an application and to dynamically employ the selected technique in place of a current technique without re-initializing the application. The computer system may be configured to determine that a current address translation technique incurs a high overhead for the application's current workload and may be configured to select a different technique dependent on various performance criteria and/or a user policy. Dynamically employing the selected technique may include reorganizing a memory, reorganizing a translation table, allocating a different block of memory to the application, changing a page or segment size, or moving to or from a page-based, segment-based, or function-based address translation technique. A selected translation technique may be dynamically employed for the application independent of a translation technique employed for a different application. |

ABSTRACT | To protect computer programs against security attacks that attempt to corrupt pointers within the address space of the program, the value of a pointer is encrypted each time the pointer is initialized or modified, and then the value is decrypted before use, i.e., each time the pointer is read. Preferably, the encrypting and decrypting steps are effected by instructions generated by a compiler during compilation of the program. One convenient method of implementing the encrypting and decrypting steps is by XOR'ing the pointer with a predetermined encryption key value, which could be specially selected or selected at random. |

ABSTRACT | A Heart Beat System (HBS) enables both inertial navigation system (INS) technology and other sensors, e.g., laser radar (LIDAR) systems, cameras and the like to be precisely time-coupled. The result of this coupling enables microsecond control by the HBS to each sensor slave component. This synchronization enables the precise time of each sensor measurement to be known which in turn allows highly accurate world coordinates to be computed from each set of received date, e.g., laser pulses range data. Such precision results in 3-dimensional point cloud data with relative accuracies in the 5-10 cm range and absolute positioning accuracies in the sub 40 cm range. This precision further enables multiple sensors to be used simultaneously with outstanding registration which leads to fused 3D point cloud databases representing a more comprehensive urban scene. Finally, 3D data collected from subsequent missions can be used for precision change detection analysis. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention relates to a new method for identifying polypeptides by deducing the amino acid sequence of the carboxy and amino termini by a mass spectrometer analysis. The method comprises the steps of dissociating highly charged peptide precursor ions (e.g., z>4) using electron transfer dissociation inducing anions followed by removal of those reagents and introduction of a second, proton transfer inducing anion type. The second PTR reaction duration is adjusted to convert the ETD products to primarily the +1 charge-state to reduce the highly charged c and z-type fragments, producing an m/z spectrum containing a series of c and z-type fragment ions that are easily interpreted to reveal the sequence of the amino and carboxy terminus, respectively. |

ABSTRACT | Routing in a wireless network of communication devices that are located within a network boundary moves network traffic from a first communication device to a second communication device. A geometric indicator of network connectivity is constructed that identifies a curve on which network nodes are located and a network location for each node of the wireless network is determined, so that the network location of a node p identifies a node on the geometric indicator curve that is closest to the node p and indicates connectivity from the node p to the closest node of the geometric indicator curve. A routing scheme is determined, to route in the wireless network from the first communication device to the second communication device based on the respective determined network locations for the first and second communication devices. |

ABSTRACT | A new technique for recording a series of images of a high-speed event (such as, but not limited to: ballistics, explosives, laser induced changes in materials, etc.) is presented. Such technique(s) makes use of a lenslet array to take image picture elements (pixels) and concentrate light from each pixel into a spot that is much smaller than the pixel. This array of spots illuminates a detector region (e.g., film, as one embodiment) which is scanned transverse to the light, creating tracks of exposed regions. Each track is a time history of the light intensity for a single pixel. By appropriately configuring the array of concentrated spots with respect to the scanning direction of the detection material, different tracks fit between pixels and sufficient lengths are possible which can be of interest in several high-speed imaging applications. |

ABSTRACT | A digital lithographic process first deposits a mask layer comprised of print patterned mask features. The print patterned mask features define gaps into which a target material may be deposited, preferably through a digital lithographic process. The target material is cured or hardened, if necessary, into target features. The mask layer is then selectively removed. The remaining target features may then be used as exposure or etch masks, physical structures such as fluid containment elements, etc. Fine feature widths, narrower the minimum width of the print patterned mask features, may be obtained while realizing the benefits of digital lithography in the manufacturing process. |

The selecting of the plurality of potential migration speeds selects a migration speed below a threshold speed, wherein the threshold speed defines a maximum system utility loss permitted. |

ABSTRACT | An apparatus and method for enhancing the security of a cluster box unit which includes a protective enclosure, internal cabinetry, door, hinge and locking system. The cluster box unit may also include outgoing mail compartment doors that are heavily constructed and rigidly reinforced, with the locks carried thereon protectively shielded, and with the extensible bolts of these locks being engaged by brackets that not only lock the outgoing mail compartment doors but also the master loading doors of the cluster box units. The cluster box unit may also include master loading doors are provided with hinges that extend the full height of the doors—hinges that are defined by pivotally interfitting elements of extrusions that very sturdily mount the master loading doors, that prevent prying or bending the doors in the vicinities of their hinges. The interfitting elements of the hinge extrusions also permit the doors to be installed on their surrounding door frames quickly and easily, and permit one or both of the master loading doors to be quickly and easily removed for service or replacement when necessary. |

How To Use This Page
THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.
This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, July 06, 2010.
The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
VIEW PATENT
As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
