ABSTRACT | The invention involves peptides of from about 7 to about 50 amino acid residues in length that have epitopes that bind to more than one HLA class II protein and stimulate CD4+ T cells for treatment of cancer from one of three serine proteases overexpressed in ovarian cancer and other cancers—stratum corneum chymotryptic enzyme, matriptase, and hepsin. Since the peptides bind to more than one HLA class II protein variant, they can be used to treat cancer in most patients of a population having a variety of HLA class II alleles. The peptides can be loaded onto autologous dendritic cells of a cancer patient and infused into the patient to activate a CD4+ and CD8+ T cell response that recognizes tumor cells expressing the peptide antigen. |

ABSTRACT | Chimeric respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and vaccine compositions thereof are produced by introducing one or more heterologous gene(s) or gene segment(s) from one RSV subgroup or strain into a recipient RSV backround of a different subgroup or strain. The resulting chimeric RSV virus or subviral particle is infectious and attenuated, preferably by introduction of selected mutations specifying attenuated phenotypes into a chimeric genome or antigenome to yield, for example, temperature sensitive (ts) and/or cold adapted (ca) vaccine strains. Alternatively, chimeric RSV and vaccine compositions thereof incorporate other mutations specifying desired structural and/or phenotypic characteristics in an infectious chimeric RSV. Such chimeric RSV incorporate desired mutations specified by insertion, deletion, substitution or rearrangement of one or more selected nucleotide sequence(s), gene(s), or gene segment(s) in a chimeric RSV clone. This provides a method for development of novel vaccines against diverse RSV strains by using a common attenuated backbone as a vector to express protective antigens of heterologous strains. The immune system of an individual is stimulated to induce protection against natural RSV infection, preferably in a multivalent manner to achieve protection against multiple RSV strains and/or subgroups. |

ABSTRACT | A novel human member of the Bcl-2 family Bcl-B has been identified, which is closest in amino-acid sequence homology to the Boo (Diva) protein. The Bcl-B protein is widely expressed in adult human tissues. The Bcl-B protein modulates apoptosis. Bcl-B also binds Bcl-2. BCl-XL, and Bax but not Bak. Bcl-B displays a unique pattern of selectivity for binding and regulating the function of other members of the Bcl-2 family. Accordingly, provided herein is a method for identifying a molecule that binds to the Bcl-B polypeptide, by contacting the Bcl-B polypeptide with a test molecule and determining whether the test molecule binds to the polypeptide. |

ABSTRACT | Methods of producing cyclic peptides and splicing intermediates of peptides in a looped conformation are disclosed. The methods utilize the trans-splicing ability of split inteins to catalyze cyclization of peptides from a precursor peptide having a target peptide interposed between two portions of a split intein. The interaction of the two portions of the split intein creates a catalytically-active intein and also forces the target peptide into a loop configuration that stabilizes the ester isomer of the amino acid at the junction between one of the intein portions and the target peptide. A heteroatom from the other intein portion then reacts with the ester to form a cyclic ester intermediate. The active intein catalyzes the formation of an aminosuccinimide that liberates a cyclized form of the target peptide, which spontaneously rearranges to form the thermodynamically favored backbone cyclic peptide product. Also disclosed are nucleic acid molecules, polypeptides, methods for making cyclic peptides, methods of making libraries, and methods of screening peptides. |

ABSTRACT | A shotgun metabolomics approach using MALDI-tandem mass spectrometry was developed for the rapid analysis of cellular metabolites. Through the use of neutral organic solvents to inactivate endogenous enzyme activities (i.e., methanol/chloroform/H2O extraction), multiplexed extraction conditions and combinatorial alterations in matrix stereoelectronic composition and analyte interactions, multiple suites of metabolites were directly ionized and quantitated directly from biologic extracts without the need for prior chromatographic separation. Through combinatorial alterations in 9-aminoacridine charge, aromaticity and stacking, a set of multiplexed conditions was developed that allowed identification of many hundreds of peaks corresponding to metabolites from mouse heart extracts. Identification of metabolite peaks was based on mass accuracy and isomeric species were assigned based on diagnostic fragment ions present during tandem mass spectrometry for many of the identified metabolite peaks. |

ABSTRACT | A preferred embodiment comprises a method and system for (a) detecting objects or targets which may or may not be nonreflective to electromagnetic radiation, and/or (b) generating an image of a subject or area, comprising generating an entangled photon pair beam; splitting the entangled photon pair beam into first and second parts; the first parts being directed in a first direction towards a first location, and the second parts being received into a measuring device; measuring the physical characteristics of the conjugate second parts to determine whether or not the first parts have encountered the presence or absence of an object at the first location in combination with the time that the first part takes to enter the first location. The method and system incorporate a photon beam in a reference path that never directly interacts with the object yet is determinative of presence or absence of an object at the first location. The splitting of the entangled photon pair beam occurs prior to the first parts being absorbed by said object, and the measuring of the characteristics of the conjugates occurs subsequent to the splitting of the entangled photon beam. |

ABSTRACT | A frequency change detector splits a frequency standard signal into two undelayed frequency signals, one of which is delayed by a predetermined amount. The delayed signal is then mixed with the undelayed frequency signal into a mixed signal that is further filtered and amplified for providing an output signal indicating frequency changes of the frequency standard signal. The mixed frequency signal indicates frequency changes of the original frequency standard signal without reference to another frequency standard. This frequency change detector is well suited for use on satellites as an early warning detection of changes in on-board atomic frequency standards. |

ABSTRACT | A system for analyzing a sample for the presence of an analyte in a sample. The system includes a sample holder for containing the sample; an excitation source, such as a laser, and at least one linear array radially disposed about the sample holder. Radiation from the excitation source is directed to the sample, and the radiation induces fluorescent light in the sample. Each linear array includes a plurality of fused silica optical fibers that receive the fluorescent light and transmits a fluorescent light signal from the first end to an optical end port of the linear array. An end port assembly having a photo-detector is optically coupled to the optical end port. The photo-detector detects the fluorescent light signal and converts the fluorescent light signal into an electrical signal. |

ABSTRACT | A system and method for determining a classifier to discriminate between two classes—object or non-object. The classifier may be used by an object detection program to detect presence of a 3D object in a 2D image (e.g., a photograph or an X-ray image). The overall classifier is constructed of a sequence of classifiers (or “sub-classifiers”), where each such classifier is based on a ratio of two graphical probability models (e.g., Bayesian networks). A discrete-valued variable representation at each node in a Bayesian network by a two-stage process of tree-structured vector quantization is discussed. The overall classifier may be part of an object detector program that is trained to automatically detect many different types of 3D objects (e.g., human faces, airplanes, cars, etc.). Computationally efficient statistical methods to evaluate overall classifiers are disclosed. The Bayesian network-based classifier may also be used to determine if two observations (e.g., two images) belong to the same category. For example, in case of face recognition, the classifier may determine whether two photographs are of the same person. A method to provide lighting correction or adjustment to compensate for differences in various lighting conditions of input images is disclosed as well. As per the rules governing abstracts, the content of this abstract should not be used to construe the claims in this application. |

ABSTRACT | Embodiments of an optical device, an array of optical devices, and a technique for fabricating the optical device or the array are described. This optical device is implemented on a substrate (such as silicon), and includes a thermally tunable optical waveguide that has good thermal isolation from its surroundings. In particular, a portion of a semiconductor in the optical device, which includes the optical waveguide, is free standing above a gap between the semiconductor layer and the substrate. By reducing the thermal coupling between the optical waveguide and the external environment, the optical device can be thermally tuned with significantly less power consumption. |

ABSTRACT | A normally opaque waveguide interacting with a drop-filter cavity can be switched to a transparent state when the drop filter is also coupled to a dipole. This dipole induced transparency may be obtained even when the vacuum Rabi frequency of the dipole is much less than the cavity decay rate. The condition for transparency is a large Purcell factor. Dipole induced transparency can be used in quantum repeaters for long distance quantum communication. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed is a method, computer program product and a server unit of a virtual execution environment having at least one client. The server unit includes a network interface for conducting bidirectional communications with the at least one client and a control unit configured to determine, for individual ones of positions in a virtualized execution of an application, those components that are required at each position; to establish a pseudo-distance between the positions in the virtualized execution of the application; and to identify components that are candidates for prefetching as those components required at one or more positions that are proximate to a current position. The pseudo-distance between positions is indicative of an urgency of prefetching candidate components for regulating an amount of resources devoted to the prefetching of components. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention is a system that switches between non-secure and secure modes by making processes, applications and data for the non-active mode unavailable to the active mode. That is, non-secure processes, applications and data are not accessible when in the secure mode and visa versa. This is accomplished by creating dual hash tables where one table is used for secure processes and one for non-secure processes. A hash table pointer is changed to point to the table corresponding to the mode. The path-name look-up function that traverses the path name tree to obtain a device or file pointer is also restricted to allow traversal to only secure devices and file pointers when in the secure mode and only to non-secure devices and files in the non-secure mode. The process thread run queue is modified to include a state flag for each process that indicates whether the process is a secure or non-secure process. A process scheduler traverses the queue and only allocates time to processes that have a state flag that matches the current mode. Running processes are marked to be idled and are flagged as unrunnable, depending on the security mode, when the process reaches an intercept point. The switch operation validates the switch process and pauses the system for a period of time to allow all running processes to reach an intercept point and be marked as unrunnable. After all the processes are idled, the hash table pointer is changed, the look-up control is changed to allow traversal of the corresponding security mode branch of the file name path tree, and the scheduler is switched to allow only threads that have a flag that corresponds to the security mode to run. The switch process is then put to sleep and a master process, either secure or non-secure, depending on the mode, is then awakened. |

ABSTRACT | Embodiments of the present system and method are useful for chemical deposition, particularly continuous deposition of thin films. Disclosed systems typically comprise a micromixer and a microchannel applicator. A deposition material or materials is applied to a substrate, such as an oxidized silicon substrate, a flexible substrate useful for forming flexible devices, such as flexible transistors, and combinations of different substrates. Uniform and highly oriented surface morphologies of films deposited using disclosed embodiments are clearly improved compared to films deposited by a conventional batch process. The process can be used to tailor the composition and morphology of the material deposited on a substrate. The present process can be used at low temperatures as a post-deposition, high-temperature annealing step is obviated. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention concerns methods and compositions for the construction of a series of stable vectors for genomic library construction useful in Gram negative species. In certain embodiments, the vectors contain the pBBR1 replicon, capable of to stable replication in a broad range of Gram negative species. In various embodiments, the plasmid vectors may also contain bidirectional, rho-independent transcriptional terminators flanking the multiple cloning site, which allows for greater insert stability, and thus, greater genomic representation. Each vector may vary in its selection marker region, mobilization function, and promoter used to express insert sequences. These vectors are of use in the screening of highly representational genomic libraries in a broad variety of Gram negative species. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides methods for fabricating semiconductor structures and devices, particularly ultra-shallow doped semiconductor structures exhibiting low electrical resistance. Methods of the present invention use modification of the composition of semiconductor surfaces to allow fabrication of a doped semiconductor structure having a selected dopant concentration depth profile, which provides useful junctions and other device components in microelectronic and nanoelectronic devices, such as transistors in high density integrated circuits. Surface modification in the present invention also allows for control of the concentration and depth profile of defects, such as interstitials and vacancies, in undersaturated semiconductor materials. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed are exemplary monolithic acoustically coupled thin film piezoelectric-on-substrate filters that operate in a wide frequency range. The monolithic thin-film-piezoelectric acoustic filters includes a resonant structure that is released from and supported by a substrate that comprises a thin-film piezoelectric layer disposed between a lower electrode and a plurality of electrically isolated upper electrodes. Second order narrowband filters are realized by utilizing coupled resonance modes of a single microstructure. Narrow-bandwidth filters are disclosed that are suitable for channel-select applications in IF and RF bands. Filter Q values of 800 at 250 MHz, 470 at 360 MHz, and 400 at 3.5 GHz for small footprint second-order filters are disclosed. The measured power handling of these devices is high due to the use of high energy density structural material, showing a 0.2 dB compression point of >15 dBm at 360 MHz. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed is an integrated tunable inductor having mutual micromachined inductances fabricated in close proximity to a tunable inductor that is switched in and out by micromechanical ohmic switches to change the inductance of the integrated tunable inductor. To achieve a large tuning range and high quality factor, silver is preferably used as the structural material to co-fabricate the inductors and micromachined switches, and silicon is selectively removed from the backside of the substrate. Using this method, exemplary tuning of 47% at 6 GHz is achievable for a 1.1 nH silver inductor fabricated on a low-loss polymer membrane. The effect of the quality factor on the tuning characteristic of the integrated inductor is evaluated by comparing the measured result of substantially identical inductors fabricated on various substrates. To maintain the quality factor of the silver inductor, the device may be encapsulated using a low-cost wafer-level polymer packaging technique. |

ABSTRACT | Variable phase ring oscillators are described that provide a linear phase progression between adjacent elements in an antenna array by providing a symmetric ring configuration of tuned amplifiers and a single phase shifter. The ring topology is coupled to a single PLL that allows for direct modulation and demodulation of arbitrary waveforms without using RF up/down converting mixers. The PLL distributes the transmit waveforms to all antenna elements in the transmit mode and combines the received waveforms in the receive mode without any complicated power distribution network. Ultra-wideband architectures and methods are described that utilize a first reference signal source, a VPRO, and a second reference signal source. Related methods are controlling an array and beam steering are also described. |

ABSTRACT | A digital assembler for creating three-dimensional objects from digital materials made out of discrete components comprises an assembly head, error correction mechanism, parts feeder, and a controller. The assembly head comprises several blades, each with a different function, that move in a linear direction as a unit, assembling the object line-by-line. One blade adds digital materials, another performs error recognition, another performs error removal, and another fills in new digital material where previously removed. In a method for building a structure out of digital materials, a new line is fed to the assembly head and added to the structure. Simultaneously, the new line is pressed down, the last line is checked for errors, the line before last is removed if errors were found during the last cycle, and the line second before last is replaced if it was removed during the previous cycle. |

ABSTRACT | A scanning probe microscope and methodology called resonant difference-frequency atomic force ultrasonic microscopy (RDF-AFUM), employs an ultrasonic wave launched from the bottom of a sample while the cantilever of an atomic force microscope, driven at a frequency differing from the ultrasonic frequency by one of the contact resonance frequencies of the cantilever, engages the sample top surface. The nonlinear mixing of the oscillating cantilever and the ultrasonic wave in the region defined by the cantilever tip-sample surface interaction force generates difference-frequency oscillations at the cantilever contact resonance. The resonance-enhanced difference-frequency signals are used to create images of nanoscale near-surface and subsurface features. |

ABSTRACT | A method is provided for eliminating crystals in non-oxide optical fiber preforms as well as optical fibers drawn therefrom. The optical-fiber-drawing axis of the preform is aligned with the force of gravity. A magnetic field is applied to the preform as it is heated to at least a melting temperature thereof. The magnetic field is applied in a direction that is parallel to the preform's optical-fiber-drawing axis. The preform is then cooled to a temperature that is less than a glass transition temperature of the preform while the preform is maintained in the magnetic field. When the processed preform is to have an optical fiber drawn therefrom, the preform's optical-fiber-drawing axis is again aligned with the force of gravity and a magnetic field is again applied along the axis as the optical fiber is drawn from the preform. |

ABSTRACT | Methods and pharmaceutical compositions are disclosed for reversibly inhibiting sperm receptor activity in animals. Nicarbazin, its derivatives and modifications which retain pharmacological activity are shown to inhibit activity of zona pellucida proteins and concomitant synthesis and/or assembly of the sperm receptor on the oocyte surface necessary for fertilization. Nicarbazin is easily administered, for example by simple addition to feed of an animal and is and non-toxic to the animals, providing a safe and efficient means for controlling populations of mammals and avian species. |

How To Use This Page
THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.
This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, December 07, 2010.
The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
VIEW PATENT
As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
