ABSTRACT | Low- or atmospheric pressure RF plasma-enhanced thin film deposition methods are provided for the deposition of hydrophobic fluorinated thin films onto various substrates. The methods include at least two steps. In the first step, RF plasma-mediated deposition is used to deposit a fluorinated film onto a substrate surface. In a second step, plasma-generated active sites on the fluorinated film are quenched by reacting them with stable fluorinated gas-phase molecules in situ, in the absence of plasma, to provide a hydrophobic fluorinated thin film having a very low oxygen content. In some instances the hydrophobic fluorinated thin films have an atomic oxygen concentration of no more than about 3%. |

ABSTRACT | A waterless power generator, particularly a waterless electrical power generator and a passively controlled process for producing electricity with a fuel cell using stoichiometric amounts of a solid hydrogen fuel and byproduct water vapor produced by the fuel cell to generate hydrogen gas. A fuel cell reaction of hydrogen and oxygen produces electrical energy as well as by-product water which diffuses back into the power generator as water vapor to react with the hydrogen fuel, producing more hydrogen gas. This generated hydrogen gas is then used as a fuel which allows the fuel cell to generate additional electrical power and additional water. The process runs without any attached water source or water supply other than the water which is produced by the fuel cells themselves. |

ABSTRACT | An apparatus and method provides the foundation for designing reconfigurable electronic computing systems. The invention relies on an ability to change the resistance state of a memristor device to achieve an optimal voltage at specific circuit nodes, whereby this dynamically and autonomously causes the circuit to reconfigure itself and produce a different output for the same input relative to the circuit's initial state. The circuit's state remains constant until the memristor's resistance is changed, at which point the circuit's function is “reprogrammed”. |

ABSTRACT | A high-speed lookup table is designed using Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic elements and fabricated using superconducting integrated circuits. The lookup table is composed of an address decoder and a programmable read-only memory array (PROM). The memory array has rapid parallel pipelined readout and slower serial reprogramming of memory contents. The memory cells are constructed using standard non-destructive reset-set flip-flops (RSN cells) and data flip-flops (DFF cells). An n-bit address decoder is implemented in the same technology and closely integrated with the memory array to achieve high-speed operation as a lookup table. The circuit architecture is scalable to large two-dimensional data arrays. |

ABSTRACT | Methods and apparatus for broad tuning of single wavelength quantum cascade lasers and the use of light output from such lasers for highly sensitive detection of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, acetylene, and vapors of explosives such as trinitrotoluene (TNT) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and TATP's precursors including acetone and hydrogen peroxide. These methods and apparatus are also suitable for high sensitivity, high selectivity detection of other chemical compounds including chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. A quantum cascade laser (QCL) system that better achieves single mode, continuous, mode-hop free tuning for use in L-PAS (laser photoacoustic spectroscopy) by independently coordinating gain chip current, diffraction grating angle and external cavity length is described. An all mechanical method that achieves similar performance is also described. Additionally, methods for improving the sensor performance by critical selection of wavelengths are presented. |

ABSTRACT | A mechanism is provided for routing information through the data processing system. Data is received at a source processor within a set of processors that is to be transmitted to a destination processor, where the data includes address information. A first determination is performed as to whether the destination processor is within a same processor book as the source processor based on the address information. A second determination is performed as to whether the destination processor is within a same supernode as the source processor based on the address information if the destination processor is not within the same processor book. A routing path is identified for the data based on results of the first determination, the second determination, and one or more routing table data structures. The data is then transmitted from the source processor along the identified routing path toward the destination processor. |

ABSTRACT | An addressing model is provided where devices, including I/O devices, are addressed with internet protocol (IP) addresses, which are considered part of the virtual address space. A task, such as an application, may be assigned an effective address range, which corresponds to addresses in the virtual address space. The virtual address space is expanded to include Internet protocol addresses. Thus, the page frame tables are also modified to include entries for IP addresses and additional properties for devices and I/O. Thus, a processing element, such as an I/O adapter or even a printer, for example, may also be addressed using IP addresses without the need for library calls, device drivers, pinning memory, and so forth. This addressing model also provides full virtualization of resources across an IP interconnect, allowing a process to access an I/O device across a network. |

ABSTRACT | An integrated circuit has a first component that has a dynamic characteristic that varies among like integrated circuits, for example, among integrated circuits fabricated using the same lithography mask. Operating the first component produces an output that is dependent on the dynamic characteristic of the first component. A digital value associated with the integrated circuit is generated using the output of the first component, and then the generated digital value is used in operation of the integrated circuit. |

ABSTRACT | A method of optimizing a computer program includes executing a program including a hint defined as a variable in program and providing within the program, and a marker instruction that receives the hint as a parameter. The marker instruction marks a section of the computer program for a subsequent optimization. During the execution of the computer program, and in response to the marker instruction being executed, a hardware engine monitors data accesses associated with execution of instructions in the marked section and stores the data accesses in the storage of the hint. A subsequent execution of the marked section of the computer program is optimized using the data stored in the storage of the hint. |

ABSTRACT | A liposome contains an active agent and has a gel-phase lipid bilayer membrane comprising phospholipid and a surface active agent. The phospholipids are the primary lipid source for the lipid bilayer membrane and the surface active agent is contained in the bilayer membrane in an amount sufficient to increase the percentage of active agent released at the phase transition temperature of the lipid bilayer, compared to that which would occur in the absence of the surface active agent. The surface active agent is present in the lipid bilayer membrane so as to not destabilize the membrane in the gel phase. |

ABSTRACT | The invention provides methods and kits for ordering sequence information derived from one or more target polynucleotides. In one aspect, one or more tiers or levels of fragmentation and aliquoting are generated, after which sequence information is obtained from fragments in a final level or tier. Each fragment in such final tier is from a particular aliquot, which, in turn, is from a particular aliquot of a prior tier, and so on. For every fragment of an aliquot in the final tier, the aliquots from which it was derived at every prior tier is known, or can be discerned. Thus, identical sequences from overlapping fragments from different aliquots can be distinguished and grouped as being derived from the same or different fragments from prior tiers. When the fragments in the final tier are sequenced, overlapping sequence regions of fragments in different aliquots are used to register the fragments so that non-overlapping regions are ordered. In one aspect, this process is carried out in a hierarchical fashion until the one or more target polynucleotides are characterized, e.g. by their nucleic acid sequences, or by an ordering of sequence segments, or by an ordering of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), or the like. |

ABSTRACT | The syntheses of the natural products, avrainvillamide and stephacidin B, are provided. The α,β-unsaturated nitrone functionality of avrainvillamide and its 3-alkylidene-3H-indole 1-oxide core is shown to covalently and reversibly bond to heteroatom-based nucleophiles. This capability may allow these molecules to bind active site nucleophiles and may provide the basis for designing potent and selective enzyme inhibitors. Both avrainvillamide and its dimer stephacidin B have been reported to exhibit antiproliferative activity, and avrainvillamide has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant bacteria. Avrainvillamide has been found to target cytoskeleton-linking membrane protein (CLIMP-63) thereby preventing cells from undergoing mitosis. The invention provides syntheses of these natural products as well as analogs of these natural products and their functional cores. The compounds of the invention may be used in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, and bacterial infection. |

ABSTRACT | One aspect of the present disclosure is directed towards a new film forming paint that Bragg diffracts light in the visible and NIR spectral regions. The paint may be comprised of highly charged polymer spheres that self assemble and maintain their diffraction in the presence of the different ingredients of the paint formulation, so that the self assembled arrays diffract light in both wet and dry states. Another aspect of the present invention is directed to a process for making highly charged polymeric spheres. Another aspect of the present invention is directed to the highly charged polymeric spheres themselves. The high surface charge density of the spheres enables the stability and self assembly of the spheres in the presence of the other paint ingredients. These spheres can find useful practical applications in paints, inks, coatings, cosmetics and light filtering applications. Because of the rules governing abstracts, this abstract should not be used to construe the claims. |

ABSTRACT | In tensor MRI, a set of k-space MRI data points is acquired that includes one or more k-space subsets of MRI data points. An object orientation (or spatial transformation) corresponding to each of the k-space subsets is determined. Because the object orientation (or spatial transformation) can differ from subset to subset, the overall set of k-space data can be inconsistent with respect to object orientation (or spatial transformation). This possible inconsistency can be addressed by providing a k-space tensor model that includes object orientation and/or spatial transformation information corresponding to each of the subsets. A tensor MRI image can be reconstructed from the set of k-space MRI data points by using the k-space tensor model to account for object orientation and/or spatial transformation. |

ABSTRACT | Methods, systems, and computer program products for performing real-time quadrature projection based FDOCT are disclosed. According to one method, a plurality of interferogram signals is phase shifted. A Fourier transform is applied to each of the plurality of interferogram signals. Depth dependence of the plurality of transformed interferogram signals is then removed. A real quadrature component and an imaginary quadrature component for each of the plurality of transformed interferogram signals are subsequently calculated. The real quadrature components of the transformed interferogram signals are combined to obtain a derived real component and the imaginary quadrature components of the transformed interferogram signals are combined to obtain a derived imaginary component. A full-range depth profile of the object is constructed by adding the derived real component to the product of the derived imaginary component and a scaling factor. A full-range depth image of the object is then generated using the full-range depth profile. |

ABSTRACT | A miniature microphone comprising a diaphragm compliantly suspended over an enclosed air volume having a vent port is provided, wherein an effective stiffness of the diaphragm with respect to displacement by acoustic vibrations is controlled principally by the enclosed air volume and the port. The microphone may be formed using silicon microfabrication techniques and has sensitivity to sound pressure substantially unrelated to the size of the diaphragm over a broad range of realistic sizes. The diaphragm is rotatively suspend for movement through an arc in response to acoustic vibrations, for example by beams or tabs, and has a surrounding perimeter slit separating the diaphragm from its support structure. The air volume behind the diaphragm provides a restoring spring force for the diaphragm. The microphone's sensitivity is related to the air volume, perimeter slit, and stiffness of the diaphragm and its mechanical supports, and not the area of the diaphragm. |

ABSTRACT | The artificial percept of light may be created by electrically stimulating the neurons of the retina. While a photolithographed array internal to the retina provides superior resolution, an array external to the retina provides easier implantation and improved manufacturability. Therefore it is advantageous to supply a high-resolution electrode array internal to the sclera, near the fovea and a lower-resolution electrode array eternal to the sclera near the periphery of the retina. |

ABSTRACT | This invention relates to a method for producing components with internal architectures, and more particularly, this invention relates to a method for producing structures with microchannels via the use of diffusion bonding of stacked laminates. Specifically, the method involves weakly bonding a stack of laminates forming internal voids and channels with a first generally low uniaxial pressure and first temperature such that bonding at least between the asperites of opposing laminates occurs and pores are isolated in interfacial contact areas, followed by a second generally higher isostatic pressure and second temperature for final bonding. The method thereby allows fabrication of micro-channel devices such as heat exchangers, recuperators, heat-pumps, chemical separators, chemical reactors, fuel processing units, and combustors without limitation on the fin aspect ratio. |

ABSTRACT | Carbon dioxide and other acid gases are removed from gaseous streams using aqueous absorption and stripping processes. By replacing the conventional stripper used to regenerate the aqueous solvent and capture the acid gas with a matrix stripping configuration, less energy is consumed. The matrix stripping configuration uses two or more reboiled strippers at different pressures. The rich feed from the absorption equipment is split among the strippers, and partially regenerated solvent from the highest pressure stripper flows to the middle of sequentially lower pressure strippers in a “matrix” pattern. By selecting certain parameters of the matrix stripping configuration such that the total energy required by the strippers to achieve a desired percentage of acid gas removal from the gaseous stream is minimized, further energy savings can be realized. |

ABSTRACT | A variable capacitor, a microfabricated implantable pressure sensor including a variable capacitor and an inductor, and related pressure measurement and implantation methods. The inductor may have a fixed or variable inductance. A variable capacitor and pressure sensors include a flexible member that is disposed on a substrate and defines a chamber. Capacitor elements extend indirectly from the flexible member. Sufficient fluidic pressure applied to an exterior surface of the flexible member causes the flexible member to move or deform, thus causing the capacitance and/or inductance to change. Resulting changes in resonant frequency or impedance can be detected to determine pressure, e.g., intraocular pressure. |

ABSTRACT | Composite materials are disclosed having low filler percolation thresholds for filler materials into the composite matrix material along with methods of controlling filler interconnectivity within the composite matrix material. Methods are, thus, disclosed that provide the ability to control the desired properties of the composites. The composites of the present disclosure are characterized by a “pseudo-crystalline” microstructure formed of matrix particles and filler particles where the matrix particles are faceted and substantially retain their individual particle boundaries and where the filler particles are interspersed between the matrix particles at the individual matrix particle boundaries such that the filler particles form a substantially interconnected network that substantially surrounds the individual faceted matrix particles. In an exemplary embodiment, the composites are formed by selecting matrix particles and filler particles wherein the ratio of the average size of the matrix particles to the average size of the filler particles is about 10 or more. The selected matrix particles exhibit a glass transition temperature. The matrix particles and the filler particles are mechanically mixed and then subjected to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the matrix particles and a compression pressure for a period of time sufficient to cause the matrix particles to undergo deformation so as to compress them together eliminating void spaces between the particles without melting the matrix material. The method is also demonstrated to work in combination with more standard art methods such as solution mixing for the purposes of achieving additional control of the properties. |

ABSTRACT | A structure for high performance light emitting electrochemical cells comprises at least two active layers of mixed ionic/electronic conducting materials, at least one of which is electroluminescent. The active layers are sandwiched between ion blocking electrodes, typically metal and/or transparent conducting oxide, that are electrically but not ionically conductive. Application of bias to the electrodes results in the polarization of ions at the electrodes thereby generating a field to drive the injection of electronic carriers into the active layer. The injected electron and holes recombine within the active layers to emit light. The ability to balance electron and hole injection in the design of such devices provides for optimal light emission efficiency. |

ABSTRACT | An augmented expander cycle rocket engine includes first and second turbopumps for respectively pumping fuel and oxidizer. A gas-generator receives a first portion of fuel output from the first turbopump and a first portion of oxidizer output from the second turbopump to ignite and discharge heated gas. A heat exchanger close-coupled to the gas-generator receives in a first conduit the discharged heated gas, and transfers heat to an adjacent second conduit carrying fuel exiting the cooling passages of a primary combustion chamber. Heat is transferred to the fuel passing through the cooling passages. The heated fuel enters the second conduit of the heat exchanger to absorb more heat from the first conduit, and then flows to drive a turbine of one or both of the turbopumps. The arrangement prevents the turbopumps exposure to combusted gas that could freeze in the turbomachinery and cause catastrophic failure upon attempted engine restart. |

ABSTRACT | An electrospinning system using a spinneret and a counter electrode is first operated for a fixed amount of time at known system and operational parameters to generate a fiber mat having a measured fiber mat width associated therewith. Next, acceleration of the fiberizable material at the spinneret is modeled to determine values of mass, drag, and surface tension associated with the fiberizable material at the spinneret output. The model is then applied in an inversion process to generate predicted values of an electric charge at the spinneret output and an electric field between the spinneret and electrode required to fabricate a selected fiber mat design. The electric charge and electric field are indicative of design values for system and operational parameters needed to fabricate the selected fiber mat design. |

ABSTRACT | A method for multi-objective fault accommodation using predictive modeling is disclosed. The method includes using a simulated machine that simulates a faulted actual machine, and using a simulated controller that simulates an actual controller. A multi-objective optimization process is performed, based on specified control settings for the simulated controller and specified operational scenarios for the simulated machine controlled by the simulated controller, to generate a Pareto frontier-based solution space relating performance of the simulated machine to settings of the simulated controller, including adjustment to the operational scenarios to represent a fault condition of the simulated machine. Control settings of the actual controller are adjusted, represented by the simulated controller, for controlling the actual machine, represented by the simulated machine, in response to a fault condition of the actual machine, based on the Pareto frontier-based solution space, to maximize desirable operational conditions and minimize undesirable operational conditions while operating the actual machine in a region of the solution space defined by the Pareto frontier. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention relates to gated nanorod field emission devices, wherein such devices have relatively small emitter tip-to-gate distances, thereby providing a relatively high emitter tip density and low turn on voltage. Such methods employ a combination of traditional device processing techniques (lithography, etching, etc.) with electrochemical deposition of nanorods. These methods are relatively simple, cost-effective, and efficient; and they provide field emission devices that are suitable for use in x-ray imaging applications, lighting applications, flat panel field emission display (FED) applications, etc. |

ABSTRACT | One code address correction service. A carrier of items provides a sender of an item an address change service for an undeliverable address. The item includes a human readable address and a machine readable code. The machine readable code identifies at least the sender. The carrier scans the machine readable code to identify the sender and creates an address change record for the sender. The address change record includes the undeliverable address. The carrier then sends the address change record to the sender. |

ABSTRACT | Systems and methods are provided for identifying and displaying dependencies. One aspect of the invention comprises a system having a dependency parser that parses components of a system with dependencies and generates a plurality of component dependency pairs associated with the components, and a component dependency graph generator that generates a dependency directed graph from the plurality of dependency pairs. The system further includes a component levels and cycles analyzer that traverses the dependency directed graph to identify dependencies, strong components and component dependency levels associated with the dependency directed graph, and a graphical user interface that provides a tree view illustrating a dependency tree of the identified dependencies over the identified component dependency levels. |

How To Use This Page
THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.
This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, March 08, 2011.
The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
VIEW PATENT
As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
