ABSTRACT | A reductive cross coupling reaction process for functionalization of a nucleophilic alkene can be achieved. The nucleophilic alkene and a nucleophilic cross coupling partner compound can be reacted in the presence of an oxidizable alcohol and a suitable catalyst to form a reductive coupling product. Various additives can also be useful to refine the process such as by mitigating certain undesirable intermediates, facilitating specific site selectivity for various substitutions or reaction sites, etc. Chiral additives can be optionally used which act to provide asymmetric catalysis, e.g. allow for regioselective and stereoselective production of reductive coupling products. A reductive cross coupling pathway can include oxidizing the oxidizable alcohol to form a catalyst hydride. The nucleophilic alkene can be inserted into the catalyst hydride to form a catalyst-alkyl intermediate. Further, the catalyst-alkyl intermediate can be transmetallized with the nucleophilic cross coupling partner compound to form a transmetallated intermediate. The catalyst can be reductively eliminated to form the reductive coupling product and a reduced catalyst. Finally, the reduced catalyst can be oxidized under aerobic conditions, for example with oxygen, to form the oxidized catalyst and subsequent repetition through the cyclic pathway. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides methods and compositions for modulating transendothelial migration (TEM) of leukocytes. In particular, inhibition of TEM can provide a potent therapeutic approach to treating inflammatory conditions. The invention specifically relates to the discovery that the adhesion molecule CD99L2 mediates TEM of leukocytes. CD99L2 is present on endothelial cells and leukocytes and mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion. Blockade of CD99L2 by use of a specific antibody blocks migration of leukocytes into a site of inflammation. CD99L2 shows functional analogy to the structurally-related molecule, CD99, inhibition of which, in conjunction with inhibition of PECAM, causes near total blockade of TEM. Thus, blocking CD99L2 on either endothelial cells or monocytes can block migration 80-90%. In conjunction with PECAM inhibitors, TEM blockade can approach 100%. Therapeutic treatments involving inhibition of CD99L2 show significant promise in remediation of inflammatory conditions. |

ABSTRACT | Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the elderly whose etiology remains largely unknown. Previous studies identified chromosome 1q32 as harboring a susceptibility locus for AMD, but it was not identified. We identified a strongly associated haplotype in two independent data sets. DNA sequencing of the complement factor II gene (CFII) within this haplotype revealed a coding variant, Y402II, that significantly increases the risk for AMD with odds ratios between 2.45 and 5.57. This identifies Complement factor II as involved in pathogenesis of AMD. This single variant alone is so common that it likely explains 43 percent of AMD in older adults. In addition, we have replicated and refined previous reports implicating a coding change in LOC387715 as the second major AMD susceptibility allele. The effect of rs10490924 appears to be completely independent of the Y402H variant in the CFH gene. The joint effect of these two susceptibility genes is consistent with a multiplicative model, and together, they may explain as much as 65% of the PAR of AMD. In contrast, the effect of rs10490924 appears to be strongly modified by cigarette smoking. Smoking and LOC387715 together may explain as much as 34% of AMD. Our data indicate that variant genotypes at rs10490924 confer a substantially larger AMD risk to cigarette smokers than non-smokers. This observation is supported by traditional case-control modeling, by ordered subset linkage analysis (OSA) incorporating pack-years of cigarette smoking as a covariate, and by family-based association analysis using a more homogeneous set of families as defined by OSA. |

ABSTRACT | The expansion of a population of stem cells or progenitor cells, or precursors thereof, may be accomplished by disrupting or inhibiting p21cip1/waf1 and/or p27, cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors. In the absence of p27 activity, progenitor cells move into the cell cycle and proliferate; whereas in the absence of p21 activity, stem cells move into the cell cycle and proliferate without losing their pluripotentiality (i.e., their ability to differentiate into the various cell lines found in the blood stream). Any type of stem cell or progenitor cell, or precursor thereof, including, but not limited to, hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, lung, neural, skin, muscle, cardiac muscle, renal, mesenchymal, embryonic, fetal, or liver cell may be used in accordance with the invention. The present invention provides a method of expanding a cell population, cells with decreased p27 and/or p21 activity, transgenic animals with a disrupted p27 and/or p21 gene, pharmaceutical compositions comprising the cells of the invention, and methods of using these cells in gene therapy (e.g., stem cell gene therapy) and bone marrow transplantation. |

ABSTRACT | Prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA) is expressed in the majority of prostate cancer patients, making it an ideal target for cancer immunotherapy. Murine monoclonal antibody 1G8 binds to PSCA with nanomolar affinity, but its efficacy as a therapeutic agent is limited by the generation of a HAMA response. The present invention discloses humanized 1G8 antibodies in which the majority of the mouse-derived epitopes have been removed. These humanized antibodies bind PSCA with high affinity and specificity, and have been shown to reduce human bladder tumor take in a nude mouse model. These characteristics make the humanized antibodies of the present invention attractive agents for the treatment and detection of tumors expressing PSCA. |

ABSTRACT | One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that characterizes a biological sample by analyzing light emissions from the biological sample in response to an excitation. The system first radiates the biological sample with a laser impulse to cause the biological sample to produce a responsive light emission. Next, the system uses a wavelength splitting device to split the responsive light emission into a set of spectral bands of different central wavelengths. The system applies temporal delays to the set of spectral bands so that each spectral band arrives at an optical detector at a different time, thereby allowing the optical detector to temporally resolve the responsive light emission for each spectral band separately. Next, the system captures the delayed spectral bands within a single detection window of the optical detector. The system then processes the captured spectral bands. |

ABSTRACT | A handling system with an improved fairlead is provided for protecting a tow cable wherein the cable breaking strength exceeds the system-rated tension load; the fairlead being positioned collinearly between the system bellmouth and winch. A guide slot passes through the fairlead positioning the cable higher than the winch release point and bellmouth entry point, maintaining the cable down-slope as the cable exits the fairlead. The slot has a hemispherical portion tapering inward to a groove extending downward. Near the groove bottom, at the fairlead end nearest the bellmouth, is a cutting device. Under tension, the cable rides in the hemispherical portion of the groove. If tension suddenly increases from a snag, the resulting force drives the cable down into the groove where the cable is cut by the device, separating before the force damages the system. The constrained cable end is securely held in place by the taper. |

ABSTRACT | Improved annular components and improved methods for assembling annular components into a turbine engine are described with respect to an axial compressor having a plurality of annular compressor rotor airfoil assemblies (120) as an example. Each compressor rotor airfoil assembly comprises an annular rotor portion (122), a spacer portion (124) extending axially therefrom and a plurality of airfoils (52) extending radially therefrom. The plurality of airfoils may be integrally formed with the annular portion. The compressor rotor airfoil assemblies are stacked sequentially on a center-tie (134) or outer circumferential tie. The spacer portion of one compressor rotor airfoil assembly (120a) abuts the annular rotor portion of the adjacent compressor rotor airfoil assembly (120b) to retain one another on the center-tied outer circumferential tie. By stacking the compressor rotor airfoil assemblies sequentially and then retaining them, the typical split cases, flanges and rotor bolts may be eliminated. |

ABSTRACT | A GaN/AlN superlattice is formed over a GaN/sapphire template structure, serving in part as a strain relief layer for growth of subsequent layers (e.g., deep UV light emitting diodes). The GaN/AlN superlattice mitigates the strain between a GaN/sapphire template and a multiple quantum well heterostructure active region, allowing the use of high Al mole fraction in the active region, and therefore emission in the deep UV wavelengths. |

ABSTRACT | A fabrication method which forms vertical capacitors in a substrate. The method is preferably an all-dry process, comprising forming a through-substrate via hole in the substrate, depositing a first conductive material layer into the via hole using atomic layer deposition (ALD) such that it is electrically continuous across the length of the via hole, depositing an electrically insulating, continuous and substantially conformal isolation material layer over the first conductive layer using ALD, and depositing a second conductive material layer over the isolation material layer using ALD such that it is electrically continuous across the length of the via hole. The layers are arranged such that they form a vertical capacitor. The present method may be successfully practiced at temperatures of less than 200° C., thereby avoiding damage to circuitry residing on the substrate that might otherwise occur. |

ABSTRACT | One-dimensional ring structures from M13 viruses were constructed by two genetic modifications encoding binding peptides and synthesis of a heterobifunctional linker molecule. The bifunctional viruses displayed an anti-streptavidin peptide and hexahistidine (SEQ ID NO:4) peptide at opposite ends of the virus as pIII and pIX fusions. Stoichiometric addition of the streptavidin-NiNTA linker molecule led to the reversible formation of virus-based nanorings with circumferences corresponding to lengths of the packageable DNAs. These virus-based ring structures can be further engineered to nucleate inorganic materials and form metallic, magnetic, or semiconductor nanorings using trifunctionalized viruses. |

ABSTRACT | Shear-horizontal surface acoustic wave sensors with micro-cavities in the delay paths were studied using finite element methods. The microcavity devices are SAW delay path devices that have the delay path etched with square patterns at various wavelength dimensions and varying depths to increase the dispersion and bulk to surface wave conversion. Additionally the microcavities are filed with polystyrene to act as an inhomogeneous waveguide for further entrapment of wave energy near the device surface. The effects of micro-cavities and grooves on SAW propagation show significantly greater energy transmission than the other structures presented traditional sensors. |

ABSTRACT | A Gilbert cell mixer design is disclosed. Instead of using a differential transconductance stage as typically done, the design employs a differential transimpedance amplifier input stage. By utilizing a transimpedance input stage to the Gilbert mixer, feedback is used to obtain higher linearity without sacrificing noise performance. The transimpedance input stage supplies a current signal to the cascode connected Gilbert switching quad, so the transimpedance amplifier output is taken from the collector of the transimpedance amplifier output transistor, instead of the emitter as normally done with transimpedance amplifiers. |

ABSTRACT | This invention discloses a method for enhancing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), such as Global Positioning System (GPS), location calculation by supplying carrier phase corrections within a GNSS receiver used with a multiple element Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna (CRPA) receiver. GNSS carrier phase measurements should be compensated for receiver hardware and directionally dependent antenna errors to obtain desired accuracies for high precision GNSS positioning applications. One technique successfully employed in Fixed Reception Pattern Antenna (FRPA) GPS sensors applies a simple directionally dependent set of correction factors to the measurement outputs. For the complex case of a GNSS receiver employing a CRPA and dynamic beam steering, however, the multiplicity of combinations of antenna element outputs makes the FRPA compensation technique impractical. Compensation of carrier phase measurements is a problem not addressed in previous GPS CRPA beam steering sensors. |

ABSTRACT | A method and computer program product for imaging an object are disclosed. The object is illuminated with an electromagnetic wave, characterized by a spectrum of illuminating wavevectors. Electromagnetic waves scattered by the object are detected, and are characterized by a spectrum of detected wavevectors. An aperture equal to or smaller than an instantaneous characterizing wavelength of the illuminating electromagnetic wave is disposed between the source and the detector. At least one of the illuminating and detected wavevectors is varied in magnitude to provide information regarding a scattering characteristic of the object. By applying a forward model of the aperture to derive a three-dimensional scattering model, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the object may be obtained by inverting a detected data function in terms of the forward model. |

ABSTRACT | Apparatus and method for amplifying laser signals using segments of fibers of differing core diameters and/or differing cladding diameters to suppress amplified spontaneous emission and non-linear effects such as four-wave mixing (FWM), self-phase modulation, and stimulated Brillouin and/or Raman scattering (SBS/SRS). In some embodiments, different core sizes have different sideband spacings (spacing between the desired signal and wavelength-shifted lobes). Changing core sizes and providing phase mismatches prevent buildup of non-linear effects. Some embodiments further include a bandpass filter to remove signal other than the desired signal wavelength and/or a time gate to remove signal at times other than during the desired signal pulse. Some embodiments include photonic-crystal structures to define the core for the signal and/or the inner cladding for the pump. Some embodiments include an inner glass cladding to confine the signal in the core and an outer glass cladding to confine pump light in the inner cladding. |

ABSTRACT | One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that facilitates adjusting the wavelengths of lasers via temperature control. This system includes a chip with an active face upon which active circuitry and signal pads reside. A thermal-control mechanism provides localized thermal control of two lasers mounted upon the active face of the chip. By individually controlling the temperature of the lasers, the thermal-control mechanism controls the wavelengths emitted by each respective laser. By creating a temperature gradient that causes a temperature difference between two or more lasers, the system can cause the lasers to emit different wavelengths. |

ABSTRACT | This disclosure relates to a method of measuring a glucose concentration metric or a glucose metric in a patient by contacting an implantable glucose-sensing device with a test sample, which may be in the patient, under conditions that permit a sugar-binding molecule and a functionalized polymer or nano-particle ligand present throughout the matrix of a hydrogel to interact in a glucose-dependent manner to produce an optical signal resulting from quenching of a first fluorophore linked to the ligand or sugar-binding molecule and having a fluorescent emission spectrum quenched upon binding or release of glucose. Next the first fluorophore may be excited with light of a certain wavelength. Then at least one wavelength of light in the glucose-dependent optical signal from the fluorophore may be detected with a detector to produce a detected light signal, which may be processed to produce a glucose metric, such as a glucose concentration metric. |

ABSTRACT | Ternary content-addressable memories (TCAMs) may be used to obtain a simple and very fast implementation of a router's forwarding engine. The applicability of TCAMs is, however, limited by their size and high power requirement. The present invention provides an improved method and associated algorithms to reduce the power needed to search a forwarding table using a TCAM. Additionally, the present invention teaches how to couple TCAMs and high bandwidth SRAMs so as to overcome both the power and size limitations of a pure TCAM forwarding engine. By using one of the novel TCAM-SRAM coupling schemes (M-12Wb), TCAM memory is reduced by a factor of about 5 on IPv4 data sets and by a factor of about 2.5 on IPv6 data sets; TCAM power requirement is reduced by a factor of about 10 on IPv4 data sets and by a factor of about 6 on IPv6 data sets. |

ABSTRACT | An ultrasonic probe deployment device in which an ultrasound-transmitting liquid forms the portion of the ultrasonic wave path in contact with the surface being inspected (i.e., the inspection surface). A seal constrains flow of the liquid, for example preventing the liquid from surging out and flooding the inspection surface. The seal is not rigid and conforms to variations in the shape and unevenness of the inspection surface, thus forming a seal (although possibly a leaky seal) around the liquid. The probe preferably is held in place to produce optimum ultrasonic focus on the area of interest. Use of encoders can facilitate the production of C-scan area maps of the material being inspected. |

ABSTRACT | A system for damping vibration in a drill string can include a magnetorheological fluid valve assembly having a supply of a magnetorheological fluid, a first member, and a second member capable of moving in relation to first member in response to vibration of the drill bit. The first and second members define a first and a second chamber for holding the fluid. Fluid can flow between the first and second chambers in response to the movement of the second member in relation to the first member. The valve assembly can also include a coil for inducing a magnetic field that alters the resistance of the magnetorheological fluid to flow between the first and second chambers, thereby increasing the damping provided by the valve. A remnant magnetic field is induced in one or more components of the magnetorheological fluid valve during operation that can be used to provide the magnetic field for operating the valve so as to eliminate the need to energize the coils during operation except temporarily when changing the amount of damping required, thereby eliminating the need for a turbine alternator power the magnetorheological fluid valve. A demagnetization cycle can be used to reduce the remnant magnetic field when necessary. |

ABSTRACT | Described is a process for conveying a powdered material from a storage bin to a delivery destination. The process utilizes an air permeation system within a hopper to facilitate the flow of material. Intermittent blasts of high pressure air are used to clean the air permeation nozzles. After the material flows from the hopper, a screw feeder with a variable speed motor is utilized for processing the material. The powdered material is then guided to a flow measurement instrument which measures the flow of the material through the process. The variable speed motor is responsive to the measurements made by the flow measurement instrument. The material is then transferred into a powdered material feeder where it is pulled through the feeder with gravity and negative pressure. The powdered material feeder then moves the material into a rotary airlock where it is deposited into a pneumatic convey airline. |

The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
VIEW PATENT
As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
