ABSTRACT | A compressor includes a diffuser, a recirculation duct, and a flow control valve. The recirculation duct has an inlet in fluid communication with the air outlet of the diffuser, and an outlet in fluid communication with the air inlet of the diffuser. The flow control valve is selectively moveable between open and closed positions, to thereby fluidly couple and isolate, respectively, the recirculation duct inlet and outlets. During operation of the compressor, the flow control valve may be opened, which circulates a portion of the compressed air discharged from the diffuser air outlet back to the diffuser air inlet. The air that is circulated back to the diffuser air inlet reduces the effective area of the diffuser air inlet, thereby increasing the surge margin of the compressor. |

ABSTRACT | A robotic apparatus has eight actuators (M0-M7) and a linkage (LINK 0-LINK 5) that actuates an end effector. Three serial macro freedoms have large ranges of motion and inertias. Four serial micro freedoms have small ranges of motion and inertias. Translation of the end effector in any direction is actuated by at least one micro joint and at least one macro joint. The apparatus can be part of a master and slave combination, providing force feedback without any explicit force sensors. The slave is controlled with an Inverse Jacobian controller, and the mater with a Jacobian Transpose controller. A slave having more degrees of freedom (DOFs) than the master can be controlled. A removable effector unit actuates its DOFs with cables. Beating heart surgery can be accomplished by commanding the slave to move with a beating heart and cancelling out any such motion in the motions perceived by the master. |

ABSTRACT | Novel metal organic framework (MOF) molecules and methods of synthesizing them are described. MOFs are organometallic crystalline structures that have high sorption capacity due to high surface area, tailorable selectivity, an inert nature, and thermal stability at high temperatures. MOFs may be used as sorbents in preconcentrators for analytical devices to provide orders of magnitude of improved sensitivity in analyte detection. MOFs are also useful as sorbents in new compact and portable micropreconcentrator designs such as a modified purge and trap system and a multi-valve microelectromechanical system (MEMS) to achieve high gain in analyte detection. Further, MOFs may be used as coatings for novel microstructure arrays in micropreconcentrators where the microstructures are designed to increase the surface area to volume ratio inside the micropreconcentrator while minimizing the pressure drop across the micropreconcentrator. |

ABSTRACT | A method and apparatus for producing bulk single crystals of AlN having low dislocation densities of about 10,000 cm−2 or less includes a crystal growth enclosure with Al and N2 source material therein, capable of forming bulk crystals. The apparatus maintains the N2 partial pressure at greater than stoichiometric pressure relative to the Al within the crystal growth enclosure, while maintaining the total vapor pressure in the crystal growth enclosure at super-atmospheric pressure. At least one nucleation site is provided in the crystal growth enclosure, and provision is made for cooling the nucleation site relative to other locations in the crystal growth enclosure. The Al and N2 vapor is then deposited to grow single crystalline low dislocation density AlN at the nucleation site. High efficiency ultraviolet light emitting diodes and ultraviolet laser diodes are fabricated on low defect density AlN substrates, which are cut from the low dislocation density AlN crystals. Bulk crystals of ZnO may also be produced using the method. |

ABSTRACT | A directed vapor deposition (DVD) method and system for applying at least one bond coating on at least one substrate for thermal barrier coating systems. To overcome the limitations incurred by conventional methods, the DVD system uses an electron beam directed vapor deposition (DVD) technique to evaporate and deposit compositionally and morphologically controlled bond coats at high rate. The present DVD system uses the combination of an electron beam and a combined inert gas/reactive gas carrier jet of controlled composition to create engineering films. In this system, the vaporized material can be entrained in the carrier gas jet and deposited onto the substrate at a high rate and with high materials utilization efficiency. The velocity and flux of the gas atoms entering the chamber, the nozzle parameters, and the operating chamber pressure can all be significantly varied, facilitating wide processing condition variation and allowing for improved control over the properties of the deposited layer. |

ABSTRACT | An apparatus for single-sided bilayer formation includes a first fluid chamber including a sidewall and a second fluid chamber extending through the sidewall. A barrier wall separates the first and second fluid chambers and includes a nanopore therein across which a planar lipid bilayer (PLB) is formed. In use, an electrolyte is added to the first and second fluid chambers and a lipid/organic solvent mixture is added to the first fluid chamber to form a lipid/organic solvent layer. The electrolyte level within the first fluid chamber is adjusted such that the lipid layer is raised above the barrier wall and a PLB is formed. Electrolyte levels may be adjusted manually or utilizing a fluid level regulator with or without feedback control. Optionally, the apparatus may be in the form of a nanopore array. The apparatus may be incorporated into an ion channel sensing system wherein an electrical current through each PLB is separately recorded. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention is directed to a composition useful for making homogeneously mineralized self assembled peptide-amphiphile nanofibers and nanofiber gels. The composition is generally a solution comprised of a positively or negatively charged peptide-amphiphile and a like signed ion from the mineral. Mixing this solution with a second solution containing a dissolved counter-ion of the mineral and/or a second oppositely charged peptide amphiphile, results in the rapid self assembly of the peptide-amphiphiles into a nanofiber gel and templated mineralization of the ions. Templated mineralization of the initially dissolved mineral cations and anions in the mixture occurs with preferential orientation of the mineral crystals along the fiber surfaces within the nanofiber gel. One advantage of the present invention is that it results in homogenous growth of the mineral throughout the nanofiber gel. Another advantage of the present invention is that the nanofiber gel formation and mineralization reactions occur in a single mixing step and under substantially neutral or physiological pH conditions. These homogeneous nanostructured composite materials are useful for medical applications especially the regeneration of damaged bone in mammals. This invention is directed to the synthesis of peptide-amphiphiles with more than one amphiphilic moment and to supramolecular compositions comprised of such multi-dimensional peptide-amphiphiles. Supramolecular compositions can be formed by self assembly of multi-dimensional peptide-amphiphiles by mixing them with a solution comprising a monovalent cation. |

ABSTRACT | An amplitude, phase and frequency modulator circuit is provided with the circuit containing a periodically driven switch. The circuit connects a DC power source and a resistive load. Periodic operation of the switch generates a square-wave of voltage across the load. A transistor used as a switch is embedded in a switch driver that controls base current and base-emitter reverse bias voltage. The modulator DC input resistance is approximately equal to the load resistance when the switch ON-state period and OFF-state period are approximately equal. The modulator efficiency is nearly one hundred percent. The frequency response of the square-wave modulator system is high-pass with a lower cutoff frequency determined by element values. |

ABSTRACT | A method is provided for processing an acquired polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image of a region to identify a candidate pixel that correlates to a target representation. The polarimetric SAR image is composed of a plurality of pixels, and the candidate pixel corresponds to a position in the region that contains a candidate object. The process includes deconstructing J parameter components each sample, obtaining acquired values for the image from select parameter components, acquiring reference values that characterize said parameter components for the target representation, determining distance values each reference value and each acquired value, comparing the distance values against a classification criterion to determine whether the candidate pixel conforms to the target representative. The process may further include extracting N sub-apertures from the polarimetric SAR image, and combining the distance values for the sub-apertures together to obtain distance summations for comparison. The process may additionally include multiplying the distance summations with their corresponding weighting factors to obtain weighted results and combining these to produce a weighted log-likelihood function that identifies whether the pixel conforms to the target. Determining a difference may further include subtracting reference values from their respective acquired values to respectively obtain set of differences, assigning normalized defaults to the differences in response to the difference having a specified relation to parameter thresholds, and otherwise normalizing the difference, and determining natural logs of unity minus said each difference to obtain their distance values. |

ABSTRACT | A spectroscopy system including first and second lasers. The first laser is triggered to induce a plasma, such as on a surface of a target at a stand-off distance from the target. The second laser stimulates amplified emissions from the plasma detected by one or more spectroscopes. The gain induced by the second laser detects traces of explosives and other substances on surfaces at stand-off distances. The spectroscopy systems use the same telescopic optics to collect emissions from the detection surface and activated at or just before the peak emission intensity useful for detecting element signatures and intensity ratios from the trace elements in the plasma. |

ABSTRACT | A gain medium and an interband cascade laser, an interband cascade amplifier, and an external cavity laser having the gain medium are presented. The gain medium can include any one or more of the following features: (1) the active quantum well region includes a thick and In-rich GaInSb hole well; (2) the hole injector includes two or more GaSb hole wells having thicknesses in a specified range; (3) the electron and hole injectors are separated by a thick AlSb barrier to suppress interband absorption; (4) a first electron barrier of the hole injector region separating the hole injector region from an adjacent active quantum well region has a thickness sufficient to lower a square of a wavefunction overlap between a zone-center active electron quantum well and injector hole states to not more than 5%; (5) the thickness of the first InAs electron well in the electron injector, as well as the total thickness of the electron injector, is reduced; (6) the number of cascaded stages is reduced; (7) transition regions are inserted at the interfaces between the various regions of the gain medium so as to smooth out abrupt shifts of the conduction-band minimum; (8) thick separate confinement layers comprising Ga(InAlAs)Sb are disposed between the active gain region and the cladding to confine the optical mode and increase its overlap with the active stages; and (9) the doping profile of the cladding layers is optimized to minimize the overlap of the optical mode with the most heavily-doped portion of the InAs/AlSb SL cladding layers. An interband cascade laser, an interband cascade amplifier, or an external cavity laser employing a gain medium having these features can emit at a wavelength of about 2.5 μm to about 8 μm at high temperatures. |

ABSTRACT | An optical assembly uses a plastic prism with one flat surface and a collimating lens optic to provide the capability of imaging a color micro-display to the eye. The collimating optic and flat prism surface can allow for aberration-free diopter adjustment and an image with very low-magnitude, nearly-symmetric distortion. The collimating optic can also provide environmental protection of the prism involving an optical plastic device. The input illumination from the micro-display enters the prism, is reflected two times within the prism, exits the prism, and passes through the collimating optic before being viewed by the eye. Such an optical assembly can provide a field of view with eye-relief and exit pupil when viewing a full-color micro-display. |

ABSTRACT | Described herein is electroadhesion technology that permits controllable adherence between two objects. Electroadhesion uses electrostatic forces of attraction produced by an electrostatic adhesion voltage, which is applied using electrodes in an electroadhesive device. The electrostatic adhesion voltage produces an electric field and electrostatic adherence forces. When the electroadhesive device and electrodes are positioned near a surface of an object such as a vertical wall, the electrostatic adherence forces hold the electroadhesive device in position relative to the surface and object. This can be used to increase traction or maintain the position of the electroadhesive device relative to a surface. Electric control of the electrostatic adhesion voltage permits the adhesion to be controllably and readily turned on and off. |

ABSTRACT | A hybrid mobile ad-hoc network and a method of operating the same, including a mobile network node and a plurality of static network nodes randomly distributed over a coverage area with a predetermined density. The static network nodes form a static infrastructure backbone of the hybrid mobile ad-hoc network. Position information of the static network nodes, either through position awareness or triangulation with reference to other static nodes enhances the network function. The method tracks mobile node position with a minimum of overhead because of the fixed infrastructure of static nodes. The infrastructure can self-heal by placing excess static nodes in a hibernating state, and activating those in response to the failure of a nearby static node. |

ABSTRACT | An access speculation predictor may predict whether to perform speculative retrieval of data for a data request from a main memory based on whether or not a domain indicator in the data request indicates that the cache line corresponding to the data has a special invalid state or not. In particular, a first address and a domain indicator are extracted from first data request. The first address is used to select a finite state machine (FSM) of a memory controller based on memory regions associated with the FSMs of the memory controller. Speculative retrieval of data for the first data request from main memory is controlled based on whether the domain indicator identifies the special invalid state or not and, if the domain indicator identifies that the cache line does not have the special invalid state, based on information stored in registers associated with the selected FSM. |

ABSTRACT | The invention as disclosed is of a method to authenticate identify and trace sonar transmissions and echoes by embedding transparent, secure and robust digital watermarks in signal space, where the additional information incurs no cost in bandwidth. The complex short time Fourier transform is selected as the domain for embedding the digital watermark, secured by a secret key, in the time frequency representation of the signal. The watermark is designed through an iterative optimization step. This step insures that the watermarked sonar is also realizable. Selection of the time frequency region for watermarking is driven by avoidance of interference with the sonar itself, or in case of network operation, other watermarks. In addition, the selected time-frequency region remains robust to sound channel and other transmission effects. Sonar echoes are authenticated in the time-frequency plane by a correlation receiver tuned to the watermarked region using the secret key. |

ABSTRACT | A method for rapidly analyzing and editing data files with a number GUI's and an adaptive decimation ratio in a computer allows processing data files and signal data files within a given data segment for a better fit into a limited-size working space buffer and provides improved resolution of data segments in a simplified way using GUI's that allow the user to point and click at a computer screen instead of performing manual calculations. A large data segment is adaptively decimated to a smaller size automatically so that a lower resolution version of the data segment will be loaded into a fixed-size small buffer in hardware working space for further data editing. The decimation and loading process will be repeated until the user finds the desired data-section of interest. |

ABSTRACT | A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for returning a return code to an error hook in an application using a framework. An identifier and a pass-through are received from the error hook. The error hook is software code in the application. The pass-through is a set of parameters. If the identifier has an active status, a set of framework conditions is retrieved using the identifier. If the set of framework conditions is met, an inject callback is retrieved using the error identifier. The inject callback is called with the error identifier and the pass-through. An inject callback return code is received. If the inject callback return code is an execute return code, the execute return code is returned to the error hook. |

ABSTRACT | Mechanisms for providing hardware based dynamic load balancing of message passing interface (MPI) tasks are provided. Mechanisms for adjusting the balance of processing workloads of the processors executing tasks of an MPI job are provided so as to minimize wait periods for waiting for all of the processors to call a synchronization operation. Each processor has an associated hardware implemented MPI load balancing controller. The MPI load balancing controller maintains a history that provides a profile of the tasks with regard to their calls to synchronization operations. From this information, it can be determined which processors should have their processing loads lightened and which processors are able to handle additional processing loads without significantly negatively affecting the overall operation of the parallel execution system. As a result, operations may be performed to shift workloads from the slowest processor to one or more of the faster processors. |

ABSTRACT | A method of predicting a SYN flooding attack on a server. The method tracks the number of SYN signals received (or SYN+ACK signals sent) over the communications port of the server in a specified time interval, the arrival estimation window. The invention then predicts the number of anticipated ACK, RST or ACK+RST signals to be received over the communication port within a predetermined time length prediction window. The prediction may be made at multiple points within the prediction window. The prediction window is offset in time from the arrival estimation window. The prediction of ACK signals to be received is based upon the number of SYN signals received or SYN+ACK signals sent in the arrival estimation window. In one embodiment, a polynomial is fit to the data in the Arrival estimation window and extrapolated to the prediction window. The predicted number of ACK, or RST or ACK+RST signals is compared to the actual number received in the prediction window, and if the difference is in excess of a threshold value, and attack is indicated. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides, in part, a dexterous endoscope apparatus, referred to herein as a MicroFlex Scope (MFS). The MFS is an novel, small diameter, e.g., less about 1 mm to about 4 mm, about 1 mm to about 3 mm, etc., dexterous endoscope that allows for access, direct visualization, tissue sampling, treatment, etc. of body lumens. In one embodiment, the distal end of the MFS of the invention is an ultra-flexible tip that comprises a plurality of thin, curved shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator elements attached to at least one structural skeleton, e.g., a coil spring skeleton or hinge structure. The SMA actuator elements in each structural skeleton segment are indirectly heated by a heater element and produce force in response to their temperature relative to specific thresholds. In certain embodiments, the heater element may include an integrated heater/sensor element adapted to heat the actuator element and to sense the temperature and bend state of the actuator element. In configurations comprising a plurality of actuator elements, multiplexing/demultiplexing of heating currents and sensor voltages may be accomplished via a parallel bus and demulitplexing circuit. In this regard, a demultiplexing circuit using standard microelectronic fabrication techniques may be designed to achieve individual sensing and control over each actuator element. |

ABSTRACT | Disclosed herein is the discovery that administration of the NRIF3 family of transcriptional coregulators (NRIF3 and related molecules) to breast cancer cells induce rapid and profound apoptosis (nearly 100% cell death within 24 h). A novel death domain (DD1) was mapped to a short 30 amino acid region common to all members of the NRIF3 family. Two other death domains (DD2 and DD3) were also found to have effective breast cancer killing activities. Mechanistic studies showed that DD1-induced apoptosis occurred through a novel caspase-2 mediated pathway that involved mitochondria membrane permeabilization but did not require other caspases. Interestingly, cytotoxicity of NRIF3 related molecules was cell-type specific, as they selectively killed breast cancer or related cells but not other examined cells of different origins, suggesting the presence in breast cancer cells of a specific death switch that can be selectively triggered by NRIF3 and related molecules. Also disclosed are strategies utilizing NRIF3 related molecules and/or targeting this death switch for the development of novel and more selective therapeutics against breast cancer. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides systems and methods for data acquisition and image analysis that utilize twisted nematic liquid crystals (“TNLCs”) to create maps of bio/chemical functionality patterned on surfaces. The method involves the acquisition of a series of images of TNLC film that contacts the analytic surface followed by analysis of the series of images to yield maps of twist angle of the liquid crystal across the surface. This analysis technique effectively condenses a large data set (stack of images) into a compact form (map of twist angle), revealing features on the surface that were not apparent in the individual images comprising the original stack. |

ABSTRACT | This document discusses, among other things, quantification of hemoglobin content, and therefore blood volume, of muscle. An analysis of the optical spectra can determine the ratio of hemoglobin (Hb) to myoglobin (Mb) content in intact muscle. The peak position of the in vivo optical spectra from intact tissue is used to determine the ratio of Hb to Mb contributing to the optical signal. The wavelength of the peak is a linear function of the percent contribution of Hb to the optical spectra. Such analysis in combination with known Mb concentrations yields a non-invasive measure of the Hb content for in vivo muscle. |

ABSTRACT | The present invention provides a method for producing an MDF board from pulp from a fibrous lignocellulose material using a treatment or pretreatment step which exposes the material to oxalic acid or oxalic acid derivatives (particularly dialkyl ester derivatives, particularly in the vapor phase). The treated wood is then subjected to a sugar extraction wash and refined using any one of the several pulping methods to produce a final pulp product. Once this is done the pulp is used to make MDF boards having improved water repellency properties. |

ABSTRACT | An improved LSCF 6428 perovskite material of the type La12zSrx+zCo0.2+aFe0.8+bO3−δ wherein x=0.4, z=(0-0.1), a=(0.01-0.04), and b=(0.05-0.15) for use as an SOFC cathode having increased electronic and ionic conductivity. The general formula is similar to the prior art formulae (La0.6Sr0.4)1−zCo0.2Fe0.8O3−δ and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ but applies the z term to La and Sr independently as well as reducing the overall content of La. Further, by adding a small amount (a) of extra Co ions, catalytic activity, conductivity, and sinterability are further enhanced. Adding small amounts (b) of Fe and/or Fe and Co moderates the thermal expansion coefficient with no adverse effect on crystal structure or fuel cell performance. Improved sinterability, microstructure, and reduced film cracking result in high power density of fuel cells. An inherently low-cost solid state reaction method is described. |

ABSTRACT | A deflate decompressor includes at least one decompressor unit, a memory access controller, a feedback path, and an output buffer unit. The memory access controller is coupled to the decompressor unit via a data path and includes a data buffer to receive the data stream and temporarily buffer a first portion the data stream. The memory access controller transfers fixed length data units of the data stream from the data buffer to the decompressor unit with reference to a memory pointer pointing into the memory buffer. The feedback path couples the decompressor unit to the memory access controller to feed back decrement values to the memory access controller for updating the memory pointer. The decrement values each indicate a number of bits unused by the decompressor unit when decoding the fixed length data units. The output buffer unit buffers a second portion of the data stream after decompression. |

ABSTRACT | An apparatus and method for a radiation source involving phase fronts emanating from an accelerated, oscillating polarization current whose distribution pattern moves superluminally (that is, faster than light in vacuo). Theoretical predictions and experimental measurements using an existing prototype superluminal source show that the phase fronts from such a source can be made to be very complex. Consequently, it will be very difficult for an aircraft imaged by such a radiation to detect where this radiation has come from. Moreover, the complexity of the phase fronts makes it almost impossible for electronics on an aircraft to synthesize a rogue reflection. A simple directional antenna and timing system should, on the other hand, be sufficient for the radar operators to locate the aircraft, given knowledge of their own source's speed and modulation pattern. |

ABSTRACT | Images and video can be produced by compositing or alpha blending a group of image layers or video layers. Increasing resolution or the number of layers results in increased computational demands. As such, the available computational resources limit the images and videos that can be produced. A computational architecture in which the image layers are packetized and streamed through processors can be easily scaled so to handle many image layers and high resolutions. The image layers are packetized to produce packet streams. The packets in the streams are received, placed in queues, and processed. For alpha blending, ingress queues receive the packetized image layers which are then z sorted and sent to egress queues. The egress queue packets are alpha blended to produce an output image or video. |

ABSTRACT | Methods and systems for automated decision support in analyzing operation data from a complex network. Embodiments of the present invention utilize these algorithms and techniques not only to characterize the past and present condition of a complex network, but also to predict future conditions to help operators anticipate deteriorating and/or problem situations. In particular, embodiments of the present invention characterize network conditions from operation data using a state estimator. Contingency scenarios can then be generated based on those network conditions. For at least a portion of all of the contingency scenarios, risk indices are determined that describe the potential impact of each of those scenarios. Contingency scenarios with risk indices are presented visually as graphical representations in the context of a visual representation of the complex network. Analysis of the historical risk indices based on the graphical representations can then provide trends that allow for prediction of future network conditions. |

ABSTRACT | Various novel block cationomers comprising polyisobutylene (PIB) and poly(2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) segments have been synthesized and characterized. The specific targets were various molecular weight diblocks (PDMAEMA+) and triblocks (PDMAEMA+-b-PIB-b-PDMAEMA+) with the PIB blocks in the DPn=50-200 (Mn=3,000-9,000 g/mol) range connected to blocks of PDMAEMA+ cations in the DPn=5-20 range. The overall synthetic strategy for the preparation of these block cationomers comprised four steps: 1) Synthesis by living cationic polymerization of mono- and di-allyltelechelic polyisobutylenes, 2) End group transformation to obtain PIBs fitted with termini capable of mediating the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of DMAEMA, 3) ATRP of DMAEMA and 4) Quaternization of PDMAEMA to PDMAEMA+I− by CH3I. Kinetic and model experiments provided guidance to develop convenient synthesis methods. The microarchitecture of PIB-PDMAEMA di- and triblock and the corresponding block cationomers were confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy and solubility studies. |

ABSTRACT | A method of determining a property that affects expression of polynucleotides in an expression system. A plurality of polynucleotides, each encoding a polypeptide sequence, is constructed. An amino acid is encoded a plurality of times in both a first and second polynucleotide in the plurality. The amino acid is encodable by a plurality of synonymous codons including a first codon. The first codon is in the first polynucleotide at a first frequency relative to other synonymous codons, and is in the second polynucleotide at a second frequency relative to other synonymous codons. The first and second frequencies are different. Each polynucleotide is individually expressed in the expression system to measure an expression property value of the polynucleotides, thereby determining a property that affects expression of polynucleotides. The property is an effect that a frequency of use of one or more codons has on expression of polynucleotides in the expression system. |

ABSTRACT | A method assigns importance ranks to nodes in a linked database, such as any database of documents containing citations, the world wide web or any other hypermedia database. The rank assigned to a document is calculated from the ranks of documents citing it. In addition, the rank of a document is calculated from a constant representing the probability that a browser through the database will randomly jump to the document. The method is particularly useful in enhancing the performance of search engine results for hypermedia databases, such as the world wide web, whose documents have a large variation in quality. |

ABSTRACT | Xylella fastidiosa (Xj), a Gram-negative, xylem-limited bacterium, is the causal agent of several economically important plant diseases, including Pierce's disease (PD) and Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC). Identified is a HccA-like hemagglutinin gene in Xylella fastidiosa involved in the virulence of the pathogen. In essence this protein is a “molecular glue” that specifically attaches to the surface of Xylella fastidiosa causing Xylella fastidiosa cells to form aggregrates. If this protein is expressed in trans-genic plants, this protein could cause greater aggregation of Xylella fastidiosa cells in planta, thus slowing down the movement of Xylella fastidiosa and decreasing disease symptoms. The protein can also be introduced into the plant by inoculation with a plant endophyte which expresses and secretes a HecA-like hemagglutinin. Thus plants containing increased levels of a Xylella fastidiosa HecA-like hemagglutinin protein could have an increased level of field resistance to disease caused by Xylella fastidiosa. |

ABSTRACT | Each video segment in a plurality of video segments is annotated with an indicator of the likelihood that the respective video segment shows a particular feature. The plurality of video segments forms an episode of interest from a given video domain. Initial feature probabilities are calculated for respective ones of the plurality of video segments using a machine learning algorithm. Each initial feature probability indicates the likelihood that its respective video segment shows the particular feature. Refined feature probabilities are determined for respective ones of the plurality of video segments by finding the most probable state sequence in a finite state machine. This is accomplished at least in part using the determined initial feature probabilities. Finally, each of the video segments in the plurality of vides segments is annotated with its respective refined feature probability. |

ABSTRACT | A method is provided for producing a high flux, high salt rejection cellulose acetate desalination membrane. In this method, cellulose acetate polymer is dissolved in a first solvent such as methylene chloride or 2-methyltetrahydrofuran to produce a solution. Further steps involve stirring the solution, and thereafter permitting the solution to settle, for a time sufficient for a majority of the cellulose acetate to precipitate out of the solution to form a cellulose acetate precipitate. Next, the cellulose acetate precipitate is stirred into an excess methanol. Thereafter, the cellulose acetate is filtered out and used in making the desalination membrane. |

ABSTRACT | A 3D face reconstruction technique using 2D images, such as photographs of a face, is described. Prior face knowledge or a generic face is used to extract sparse 3D information from the images and to identify image pairs. Bundle adjustment is carried out to determine more accurate 3D camera positions, image pairs are rectified, and dense 3D face information is extracted without using the prior face knowledge. Outliers are removed, e.g., by using tensor voting. A 3D surface is extracted from the dense 3D information and surface detail is extracted from the images. |

How To Use This Page
THE FEDINVENT PATENT DETAILS PAGE
Each week, FedInvent analyzes newly granted patents and published patent applications whose origins lead back to funding by the US Federal Government. The FedInvent Patent Details page is a companion to the weekly FedInvents Patents Report.
This week's information is published in the FedInvent Patents report for Tuesday, February 28, 2012.
The FedInvent Weekly Patent Details Page contains a subset of patent information to provide a deeper dive into the week’s taxpayer-funded patents to help the reader better understand where a patent fits in the federal innovation ecosphere.
HOW IS THE INFORMATION ORGANIZED?
Patents are organized by the funding agency. Within each group, the patents are organized in numeric order. A patent funded by more than one agency will appear in the section of each of the agencies that funded the research and development that resulted in the invention. This approach gives the reader a complete view of the department or agency activity for the week.
WHAT INFORMATION WILL I FIND?
THE PANEL
There is a panel for each patent that contains the patent number and the title of the patent. When you click the panel, it opens to reveal the following information:
FUNDED BY
The agencies that funded the grants, contracts, or other research agreements that resulted in the patent. FedInvent includes as much information on the source of the funding as possible. The information is presented in a hierarchy going from the Federal Department down to the agencies, subagencies, and offices that funded the work. Here are two examples:
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Department of Defense (DOD)
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Army Research Office (ARO)
We do our best to provide detailed information about the funding. In some cases, the patent only reports limited information on the origins of the funding. FedInvents presents what it can confirm. We add the patents without the information required by the Bayh-Dole Act to our list of patents worthy of further investigation.
APPLICANT(S) and ASSIGNEES
FedInvent includes both the Applicants and the Assignees because having both provides more information about where the inventive work was done and by what organizations. Many organizations — universities, corporations, and federal agencies — standardize the Assignee/Owner information by the time a patent is granted. In the case of federal patents, many of the patents use the agency headquarters information for patent assignment.
Showing just the headquarters address would make Washington, DC the epicenter of all taxpayer-funded research and development. Providing both the applicant information and the assignee information provides a more accurate picture of where important taxpayer funded innovation is happening in America. Here are two examples from two different patents:
APPLICANT: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, MD
ASSIGNEE: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army Washington, DC
APPLICANT: Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
ASSIGNEE(S): The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, California); Optech Ventures, LLC (Torrance, California)
INVENTOR(S)
The inventors appear in the same order as they appear on the patent. FedInvents presents the names in first name/last name order because they are easier to read than the last name/first name order of the names on the USPTO patent documents.
ABSTRACT
The abstract as it appears on the patent.
FILED
The date of the patent application including the day of the week.
APPL NO
This is the patent application serial number. If you’d like to learn more about how application serial numbers work you can go to the Lists Page.
ART UNIT
Patent data includes the Art Unit where a patent was examined. (The Art Unit isn’t available for published patent applications.) The Art Unit provides insight into what group of patent examiners prosecuted the patent application and the subject matter that the examiners work on. For example:
3793 — Medical Instruments, Diagnostic Equipment, and Treatment Devices
You can learn more about ART UNITS on the FedInvent Patents Weekly panel called About Tech Center or you can find information on the FedInvent Lists Page.
CURRENT CPC
Current CPC provides a list of the Cooperative Patent Classification symbols assigned to the patent. These are the CPC symbols assigned at the time the patent was granted.
The FedInvent Project is a patent classification maximalist endeavor or put another way, we believe that more you understand about patent classification the more you'll learn about the nature of the invention and the types of work that the federal government is funding.
The symbol presented in BOLD is the symbol identified as the "first" classification which is the most relevant classification on the patent. The date that follows the symbol is the date of the most recent revision to the art classed there.
- A61B 1/149 (20130101)
- A61B 1/71 (20130101)
- A61B 1/105 (20130101)
The CPC symbols match the classifications found on the PDF version of the patent. Over time, the classifications on the full-text version of the patent change to reflect how USPTO organizes patent art to support its examiners. The two sets of CPCs don’t always match.
VIEW PATENT
As of June 2021, we include two ways to view a patent at USPTO. FedInvent provides a link to the Full-Text Version of the patent and a link to the PDF version of the patent.
